Chapter 3 Soap for Elephants

Villages in Gabon are scattered, and the residents of a village generally belong to the same ethnic group. The village chief is the clan leader and his post is hereditary.

The houses of the locals are unique in shape. They first use tender branches to build arches, covered with leaves and thatch, which are used to protect the sun and rain. Strictly speaking, it cannot be called a house, but at best it is just a shack.

The luxurious villa is incompatible with the surrounding houses. The young man in this villa is naturally Han Xuan, who is 21 years old. His appearance has not changed much from a few years ago. His figure is a little stronger and his facial features are more three-dimensional. He has just reached 1.85 meters tall and he no longer continues to grow. At this age, he has almost been fixed.

Even if you sit on a chair, you can see the abdominal muscles, which are not perverted, but your very stylish chest muscles support the black short sleeves. It is appropriate to describe it with the phrase "slim when you wear clothes, and you will feel fleshy when you take off clothes". The biggest change is temperament, and your appearance can be called a handsome face, and it looks comfortable, especially with your eyes, which looks deep and calm.

The coming-of-age ceremony has passed, unlike people imagined, and the scale is much smaller than that of Anya when she was fifteen years old. There are only more than 140 people in full swing, but any guest is enough to attract people to look at it.

For example, Pope John Paul II, who stayed in the Vatican for many years, Queen *******, and the new President Bush Jr., all came to congratulate him in person. The location was located in Seventeen Li Bay, California, and the number of press teams exceeded 3,000!

One hundred and forty-two invitation letters were distributed, and all of them were present. The Secretary-General of the United Nations even revised the meeting time for this and brought gifts to him to congratulate him.

Now that Han Xuan is bullying, no one will say he will bully the children again, but sadly, who dares to do that...

Those who know Han Xuan understand how terrible his power is, but this is Africa, and the news is seriously lagging behind. At this moment, the boy named Bongo in front of him stared at Han Xuan with some suspicion. Han Xuan always felt that the other party was looking at a fool.

Money is not useful in this remote and backward and environmentally cloaked area. After understanding these problems, Han Xuan changed his method and told in French: "My family produces soap, as well as cups, toothpaste, toilet paper, etc. If you give me that little elephant, I will give you two of them!"

Intentionally, Gabon was once a French colony and ruled for more than a hundred years, which led to the country's main language becoming French, as well as national languages, such as Hufang, Miyne and Batakai, etc., which Han Xuan could understand.

The boy named Bongo's face was filled with shock, and he seemed to have seen a big man with a wealthy appearance. If he had thought Han Xuan's image was one meter high before, it would have become one hundred meters, or even more.

For the people here, those things are really rare, but they are actually mainly due to inconvenient transportation. In addition, when they trade with people outside, they will be cheated. A 80-centimeter long ivory exchanged for half a piece of soap really happened in this small village.

Moreover, in the past decade, I have only been able to exchange for half a piece of soap. Due to the inequality of information, I was completely at a disadvantage. When Han Xuan heard about this, he took several minutes to accept this fact and shouted for the elephants from the bottom of his heart.

I have been to many places and seen many cultural and natural landscapes. However, like this small village called "Flame Village", it rarely makes Han Xuan feel clean. The "clean" here refers to the spirituality. The locals are extremely simple and simple, so simple that Han Xuan feels stupid. I fell in love with it shortly after I came here. Every day I see the villagers doing nothing, I feel comfortable.

The reason why it is called Flame Village is actually not related to Flame. It is mainly because there are large areas of Flame trees around the valley, so I went to such a strange name. Flame Tree is the national tree in Gabon, also known as Fire Flower, Fountain Tree, Brachy Calyx Wood, Flame Tree. The flowering period is between winter and spring. Han Xuan could still see it when he first came, but now it is gone. There is a circle of golden patterns on the edge of the crimson petals. This kind of flower is everywhere in the mountains and fields, which is extremely gorgeous.

In recent years, it has rarely appeared in the public eye. Han Xuan deliberately pursues various living conditions to make himself feel fulfilled. He rarely stays in one place for a long time and travels to all continents except Antarctica. It’s not that he has no interest in Antarctica, but he hasn’t had the chance to go there yet. If he goes all over the place at once, life will become boring.

At this moment, he enjoyed the admiring gaze of a black child named Bongo. Perhaps because the contrast was too obvious, the teeth slightly exposed in Bongo's mouth seemed to be glowing, as white as dazzling.

The residents of Fire Village usually use a plant branch called "Andiya Mo Nao" to clean their teeth. After Han Xuangang became familiar with the villagers, he tried to use it to brush his teeth.

The enthusiastic village chief helped to demonstrate. After chewing the branches and exposed the fibers, he rubbed his teeth to demonstrate. Finally, he wanted to stuff it directly into Han Xuan's mouth. After Han Xuan refused, he was injured on his face. Han Xuan was at a loss.

Unlike those black people who like to be clever in the United States who have seen them in their personality, the residents here seem to be more pure in terms of personality. If you like it, you like it. If you don’t like it, you don’t like it. On the first night of the arrival, a girl planned to recommend herself to the pillow, which scared Han Xuan very much, so she was laughed at by the bodyguards around her for a long time.

Afterwards, Han Xuan learned that he actually looked ugly to the locals and did not meet their aesthetic views. Then he couldn't help but feel that maybe the girl had a crush on her house and wanted to hold her thigh and rub her.

Bongo fell into a state of confusion. He liked the one-year-old African elephant caught by his father after falling into the trap. However, the temptation given by Han Xuan was "too great". Bongo had never given his mother a gift. He felt that the ugly man in front of him was worthy of being a rich man, and he was generous in his actions. He felt that he would definitely make a profit by using a baby elephant to exchange for those things, but he still couldn't bear to leave.

Han Xuan saw that he was shaken, so he took advantage of the victory and added: "After changing things, you can still come and feed them. Isn't it great to get these things for nothing?

Otherwise, I would like to add another piece of soap to your second mother and ask her to help find a wife for you. You are about to get married. It is best to have something as a bride gift. I will give you two more pots at that time!"

After coming to Africa, Han Xuan finally realized the strange local customs. Take Banggo's father for example. When marrying his mother, he only spent a new bow, two hundred arrows, a spear, two animal skins, two bottles of venom for arrows and two iron pots as betrothal gifts, and gave it to the woman's parents. It was already a very generous gift.

In the flame village with a strong matriarchal society, according to traditional customs, after the wife dies, the husband must marry his wife's sisters, otherwise the children will be sent back to his grandmother's house to raise him. Bongo's mother has not yet passed away, but his father still married his wife's sister, which is normal to the locals.

So Bongo and his second mother, a piece of soap was very important to him, completely dispelled all his concerns, nodded seriously to agree to Han Xuan, and left the sentence home to bring the baby elephant, and ran away happily...

Historically, Africans hunted elephants for a long time, mainly to obtain elephant flesh and skin. However, since the 1970s, ivory has gradually become the main source of people's hunting and killing elephants.

The reasons are very complicated. Not only is the rapid increase in the demand for object tines in the international handicraft market, but also the turbulence of the international financial market. Ivory, like gold and diamonds, is regarded as a hard currency with stable value, which has led to some major Western banks competing for purchase and storage.

By the early 1980s, the transaction volume of ivory in the international market was about 1.3 million kilograms per year, of which more than 90% of the ivory came from Africa. Currently, there are more than 600,000 wild African elephants living on the African continent, which is more than double the number of them than thirty years ago.

Because the price of ivory continues to rise, from the 1970s to the 1980s, the wholesale price rose from thirteen dollars per kilogram to about one hundred and fifty dollars. By obtaining an ivory, you can get a considerable income.

Therefore, some local people regard elephants as "moving gold boxes", ivory as "coveted platinum", and poaching ivory as "shortcuts to get rich". They always risk their lives and try every means to hunt elephants.

Because of ivory, countless African elephants were killed, and 80% of the ivory transported from Africa were derived from poaching. It was not until the international ivory ban was issued in 1990 that this situation was alleviated, but it could not be eradicated.

At present, in countries with less sound wildlife management, there is still a phenomenon of poaching for the black market. Most of Africa's ivory is exported to Asia. Han Xuan himself has an animal protection agency and is very familiar with these data.

After entering the 21st century, some locals still hunt elephants. Gabon is a country that has done a good job in animal protection. A few years ago, laws were formulated to regulate poaching. However, due to the existence of traditional customs, each tribe is allowed to hunt a small number of elephants every year, which will not have much impact on their ethnic groups.

Take Flame Village as an example. More than 100 people can only be considered a small village. They can legally hunt an adult elephant. The law and other things are not applicable locally. Occasionally, poaching and eating are shared, burying the bones, and no one can find a handle.

Although Han Xuan knew about these things, he had no choice but to catch the big and let the small, focusing on poaching. Those people killed an elephant just to get ivory. Compared with traditional villages such as Flame Village, the nature is much worse.

When he met the President of Gabon some time ago, Han Xuan talked about protecting animals with the other party, suggesting that the other party formulate stricter laws and close all illegal wildlife products trading venues to solve the problem of indiscriminate killing from the root...
