Chapter 59: Back to the Embankment

Although Chinese young people on the Dike Bank live in Vietnam and many of them are even born in Vietnam, they cannot derail the essence and style of Chinese children.

Five or six years ago, Chinese men and women liked Chinese clothes, and men wore cloth buttons, wide-crotch pants, with the main color of black. Rich families also wore silk embroidered with flowers or large flowers to show different social classes. Women wore black or black flower-breasted shirts and pants, and only some more progressive women wore new clothes with patterns or tones.

In the past few years after the end of World War II, the small society of Dike has undergone earth-shaking changes.

Men put on big collars, corporate collars, shirts and trousers, women gradually put on wide skirts, shirts or color skirts, while students used white clothes, blue trousers and blue skirts as uniforms, and sneakers or leather shoes. Their whole mental outlook was very similar to those of the years when the mainland was reformed and opened up in the later years. No matter where they were, they would be recognized as Chinese when they met.

Because they are changing with the times, the locals have not changed much.

Whether men, women, young and old, their clothes are mainly made of three-m-woman clothes, women wear a bun on their heads and wear hats; young women and female students like to hang their long hair and wear white or light-colored Odai. Only young male students with wealthier families are no different from Chinese youth in appearance, but only have language differences.

Looking at the Chinese students playing and making trouble in front of him, thinking of the Pingdong refugee camp that had just been visited, Professor Anderson couldn't help but sigh: "Li, your compatriots are more generous, more compassionate and more helpful than I thought. If all the citizens of this city are like you, the Prime Minister will not need to worry about the few refugee camps in the suburbs."

Most of the overseas Chinese who escaped spontaneously from the north lived in the area of Lajia Street (now Ruan Zhifang Street) in the tenth county. It turned out to be the charity land (cemetery) of the Wugang Guild Hall. In order to resettle fellow villagers who escaped continuously, they used that area, leaving only two ancient tombs and other relatives to come to excavate and relocate.

The Five Gangs use helping the poor and the needy, purchase zinc and iron sheets, wood and thatch for those penniless fellow villagers to build sheds, factories, rice factories, shops, wood factories, restaurants... to hire as many refugees as possible and to accept as many apprentices as possible. Those with relatives and friends on the embankment start various small businesses with the support of relatives and friends. In addition, the relief grain donated by overseas Chinese leaders, the starvation will basically not happen.

It is worth mentioning that major Chinese schools on the embankment have set up teaching points or night schools on Lajia Street to allow children to study. Hospitals such as Yi'an and Fude often arrange doctors and nurses to visit. In short, except for the unsatisfactory hygiene, other aspects are impeccable.

Tens of thousands of people, without asking for a penny from the government, without asking for even a little assistance from the International Red Cross and the US government, settled down with the help of their fellow villagers. And it didn't take long for them to support themselves. As a Chinese, Li Weimin was very proud.

He raised his arm and looked at his watch, and said excitedly: "A wealthy is businessman, a small wealth is frugal, and frugality is the virtue of us Chinese. Our ancestors were in danger of life in their hometown because of the difficulties in life, and they encountered years of war and chaos. They did not want to sit and wait for death. For the sake of the rice jar at home, they had to go overseas.

His experience was as bumpy as the American ancestors on the Mayflower. Some were buried in anger and some died in a foreign land. Only some lucky people could arrive here after several displaced times.

They are hard-working by nature and do not extravagant. In their daily life, they only want clothes to cover their bodies, food to fill their hunger, live to shelter from wind and rain, and walk to be full of energy. So after they get here, they work day and night, save food and use every day, and accumulate meager rewards bit by bit.

Decades later, everyone has a considerable amount of money. Some are remitted back to their hometowns to buy land, while others stay here to invest and operate, starting from the smallest business, and they have been passed down from generation to generation."

Professor Anderson thoughtfully, Li Weimin continued: "Due to his proper management, diligence and frugality, some people have changed from small wealth to big wealth. Although they are already very rich, they still save money and are immersed in work. From the most successful Guo Tonghe and Guo Yan at the end of the 19th century, to the current 'MSG king', 'Rice king', 'Steel king', 'Waste Material king'... almost all of them are from a slightly cold background.

Some of them have worked as handymen in hotels, handymen in shops, street vendors, and some have even worked as followers for dancers. They have all had experiences of not having enough food, not having good sleep, and being discriminated against by others. These experiences have given them another virtue besides diligence and thrift. They like to participate in social welfare and charity, and regard giving back to society as their obligation, so there are schools and hospitals on the embankment."

"Your ancestors are also one of them?"

"Yes, I'm proud of it."

"Lee, I am confident that you will become as outstanding businessman and philanthropist as they are."

"In fact, it's already, don't you think so?"

"Yes, yes, you are now."

As he was talking, a team of Pingchuan soldiers stopped the jeep in front. Acheng jumped out of the car and prepared his uniform, took out a document and handed it on it. The officer took it and took a look, walked to the side of the car and looked inside. Seeing Professor Anderson take off his hat, he immediately raised his hand to salute, signaled his subordinates to let go, and stepped on a motorcycle to lead the way in front.

Financing is inseparable from Chinese people. If you want to find Chinese people, you must go back to the embankment.

In order to ensure the smooth implementation of the "Industrial Village Plan", Professor Fisher and his senior officials and friends have been continuously putting pressure on the US Embassy in Vietnam. Military aid and non-military aid programs have begun to be implemented, and the policy toward Vietnam is becoming clearer. Ambassador Heath can no longer sing a counter-tone with Washington, and personally called the commander of the French Expeditionary Force, emphasizing that Li Weimin is an employee of the US agency in Vietnam, and demanded that the Pingchuan faction, controlled by the French army, ensure its safety on the embankment.

Lansdale was responsible for urging Vietnam's anti-Vietnam forces to support Diem, and had a good relationship with Master Li. He came to the embankment yesterday afternoon. While suggesting that Li Wenyuan support the new government, he emphasized that Master Li is protected by the US government and hinted that he should not act rashly.

There is only one life, and Li Weimin does not think he has the good luck of living again.

This morning, I called Ruan Wenxin again. The Chief of Staff was much more reliable than the French and Americans. I called Li Wenyuan first to warn him not to cause trouble, and then ordered two battalions of the National Army in the suburbs to station in the tenth county, and put on a stance that if you dare to touch the people I protect if you don’t give face, I will not be able to fight with you first.
