Chapter 30 "The Windfall" (30) Lisa
Chapter 30 "Windfall" (30) Lisa
The elevator stopped at the 229th floor. The corridor was full of garbage. There were many maggots crawling in the cracks in the wall and no one cleaned them. A half-naked man was lying in the middle of the corridor, covering his face with an old newspaper. He didn't know whether he was dead or alive.
"Should we... help him?" Anna said and was about to open the newspaper.
Roy quickly reached out to stop him and whispered: "Don't touch it, it might be someone from the Fox Gang. These guys like to engage in blackmail and sneak attacks."
Anna knew that what her lover said was true. In this cold and heartless city, good people often do not live long.
The wall was criss-crossed with privately connected wires, and the only surviving electric light was buzzing, turning on and off. The dim light illuminated the plastic house number on the rusty iron door:
"229041, this is it. Your brother is not at home, right."
Anna shook her head: "Albert is still working overtime in the factory.
In other words, it is impossible for him to be at home during the day, and he works several odd jobs, just to be able to do a few more hemodialysis treatments so that little Lisa can live a few more days. I feel particularly uncomfortable when I think of this... God bless them
Father and daughter weather the storm."
The two came to pick up the child without telling Albert. Due to the delay in the condition, little Lisa's uremia has reached a very serious level, and she has developed various complications, and it is very likely that she will not be able to get off the operating table.
The two secretly picked up the child to go out to play, just to prevent the worst situation from happening and at least let the child leave some good memories.
Anna loves her little niece very much, and there is a unique knocking rhythm code between them.
"Dong dong...dong...dong dong!"
"Oh! Auntie is here!" The little girl jumped up and opened the door.
As soon as Anna entered the door, she picked up Lisa and spun her around; letting her braid rub against her cheek, enjoying the tickling feeling.
"I miss you so much, little cutie."
"I miss you too, aunt."
There was a patched teddy bear on the ground, with two buttons used as eyes, and a broken toy train track that had been glued back together with strong glue. Albert had dug these out of the trash and repaired them.
Roy sighed and thought:
(Albert is a guy with a stubborn temper, high self-esteem, and refuses help from others, but he is indeed a good father and is willing to shed every drop of blood in his body for his daughter.)
Lisa picked up the teddy bear and introduced it to Anna:
"This is Mr. Chambers, the little brown bear. He likes to travel by train. Let me show him, beep... beep... the train is starting, click, click, click... Dad told me that when I feel uncomfortable, I can play to distract myself.
Forget about the pain for a moment.”
Anna's eyes shone with tears: "He is such a strong and good child. He is tortured by illness and still always smiles."
"Dad also said that a good girl should show a smile and laugh no matter how uncomfortable she is. But he rarely smiles and the family is lifeless."
Anna knew that she couldn't blame her brother. How could a person like him, who worked multiple jobs part-time and was exhausted all day long, laugh?
Roy came over and said, "Little cutie, let's go out and play together. Don't tell your dad. This is our secret, okay?"
"Okay, Uncle Roy."
"Call uncle."
"But dad said...Uncle Roy and Aunt Anna are not married yet, so we can't call you uncle yet."
"Sleeping under the same quilt all day long makes no difference whether you are married or not."
"Roy!" Anna blushed and nudged him with her elbow: "In front of the child... what are you talking about?"
"Why are you talking nonsense? This is the truth. Lisa, call uncle." Roy took out a lollipop from his pocket and shook it."
"Uncle!" Lisa obviously liked it very much, because the lollipop was in the shape of a little white rabbit and was wrapped in beautiful colored paper.
"Hey, look, this trick works every time."
After making a fortune, Roy became accustomed to giving money and favors everywhere, which always solved the problem.
In the corrupt and inefficient Terran bureaucracy, nothing can be done smoothly without benefits. The interstellar immigration qualification certificates of the two people are the best example. If they don't stuff money, they may not be approved for the rest of their lives.
"Wait a minute, can Lisa eat candy because of her illness?" Anna said worriedly.
"It's edible, the doctor said." The little girl suddenly flashed a pair of innocent big eyes and said in a childish voice:
"When you are undergoing hemodialysis, you will feel very hungry, because the sugar and toxins in the blood are dialyzed out, and the blood sugar becomes very low. You feel dizzy and have no energy. After eating a piece of candy, you feel much better. However,
Dad said dialysis is too expensive and I can’t go there often.”
"It's so pitiful." Anna hugged her niece; "Soon, you won't have to suffer from dialysis anymore."
"After transplanting an artificial kidney, will I become as healthy as other children?"
"certainly."
"If I fail...will I...never see my dad...grandparents...Uncle Roy and Aunt Roy..."
"A good boy's surgery will never fail," Roy lied.
When going out, Lisa was so excited that she accidentally hit the leg of the chair and screamed "Ouch!" in pain.
Roy picked up the slippers and patted the chair gently: "Bad chair! Let you be naughty and bully our cute little princess!"
Lisa immediately stopped feeling the pain and smiled happily:
"Uncle Roy, please hit this naughty chair hard."
"You are quite good at coaxing children." Anna said.
"Of course. When we get to the colonized planet, we can give birth to seventeen or eighteen children and let them run around in the yard. How lively it will be."
"Disgusting! You think you're a piglet!"
Little Lisa was riding in a private car for the first time, and she excitedly looked out the window. Even though everything she could see was piles of waste and polluted rivers, the little one still looked at it with gusto.
When a colorful paradise appeared in her eyes, she exclaimed:
"Oh my God! It's Disneyland! I thought it was an ordinary amusement park!"
This is every child’s dream, but the high ticket price prohibits most poor families from visiting.
Roy bought three package tickets, which allowed him to enjoy all the amusement facilities in the park. As soon as he entered the door, there was a brightly colored candy castle. Anna accompanied her little niece to play on the slides, and Roy went to buy marshmallows.
Lisa habitually sighed every time she saw the toys in the window.
"Are you feeling uncomfortable?" Anna asked; "I have medicine with me."
"No need to take medicine," Lisa said, looking at the stuffed unicorn in the window.
"When I see beautiful things, I always sigh because they never belonged to me."
Anna's eyes became wet again. Roy swept through the shopping street, bought all the most expensive toys in the window, and stored them all in storage boxes.
"How is it, do you feel good about your shopping spree, Lisa?"
"It's great! But...it's not good to make you spend money. Dad said money should be spent wisely, so it's better to return all these. I'll just play with the old toys."
"So sensible!" Roy fell in love with this little girl more and more, and kept kissing her forehead:
"Don't worry, uncle is not short of money, bring back whatever you want!"
