Research the following title problem

Some people raised objections to the question of how granddaughter-in-law calls her husband and grandparents in Chapter 121 of this volume.

Among the ancient relatives, they were roughly divided into paternal, maternal and marriage.

In this period in the book -

Grandchildren (regardless of male or female) call their grandfather: grandfather and grandfather.

Grandma is called: Grandma.

The name of the king's father and the queen mother was the Han Dynasty and before, so this was no longer very popular.

Aweng and grandma are a more colloquial title, and may have a higher usage rate, but they are not formal enough.

Grandchildren (regardless of male or female) call their grandfather and grandmother: grandfather and grandmother.

The following is the key point. In the marriage term, the husband calls his wife's father, that is, the modern father-in-law: uncle, uncle, wife, wife. Note that at this time, the term "father-in-law" actually appeared, but it is not popular.

The husband calls his wife's mother, that is, mother-in-law: a aunt, etc.

The wife calls her husband's father, that is, modern father-in-law: uncle, grandpa, etc.

The wife calls her husband's mother, that is, mother-in-law: Aunt, cockroach.

This title lasted until the Tang Dynasty. Have you heard of that poem? The red candles stopped in the bridal chamber last night and waited for the morning hall to worship my uncle and aunt.

The "uncle and aunt" here means parents-in-law.

So what do you call your wife’s own aunt (father and sister) and uncle (mother and brother)? They also call her uncle, aunt.

Finally, how do your wife call her husband's grandfather and grandma? Note that if you don't like to call her husband, that is, the husband calls her grandfather and grandfather, and the wife cannot call her.

It was not until the Yuan Dynasty that a true wife was called by her husband.

I really didn't find any records during this period, only the titles of the Tang Dynasty: Zu uncle and Zu aunt.

And in the "Book of Rites" before the Wei and Jin Dynasties, the interpretation of Zu Gu: her husband's grandmother.

"The Book of Rites: A Little Record of Mourning Clothing" "The woman is favored by her grandparents. If there are three grandparents, they will be with her relatives."

Zheng Xuan’s note: “It means that the mother of my uncle (father-in-law, husband’s father) died, and there were two stepmothers. Those who are relatives said that they were born to my uncle.”

What does this mean? That is: when the husband's grandmother dies, the woman needs to participate in the tribute. If the husband's grandmother has three (there is a stepmother, such as Wang Jun married four wives in his lifetime), the woman will mainly attach to the husband's biological grandmother.

Does Zu Gu have any other meaning? Yes, he is his grandfather’s sister.

"Book of the Later Han Dynasty": "Lai She's courtesy name Junshu, and was a native of Xinye, Nanyang. His father Zhong was a counselor during the reign of Emperor Ai and married Guangwu's ancestor Gu.

Born She.”

Lai She's father called Lai Zhong and married Liu Xiu's grandfather's sisters as his wife.

Judging from the two meanings of "Zu Gu" here, it is actually the same as "Gu".

Aunt means not only the husband and mother (mother-in-law) but also the father and sister (aunt).

So, what about my grandparents?

Unfortunately, it was not found.

"Pu Shu Ying Zhan Biography" contains: "The General Liu Hong of Zhennan is the ancestor of Zhan, please be the chief minister."

The "ancestor's uncle" here should mean the father's uncle, that is, Liu Hong is the uncle of Ying Zhan's father Ying Xiu.

So is it the same as Gu, there is another meaning? It is unknown.

In the Tang Dynasty, there was a calligraphy ceremony: "Write with your husband and grandparents, and you will be honored as your grandparents and aunts."

There is also a Dunhuang document: "The bride bows to the next words: respect the ancestors and uncles, and the brides are in front of the throne: The bride has been away for many years and has been serving Wen Qing."

At this point, the conclusive conclusion is that the grandmother of the grandmother of the grandmother from the Han Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty, which means: 1, the grandmother of the husband; 2, the grandfather and sister;

The grand uncle, the meaning of father and uncle in the Jin Dynasty, and the meaning of husband and grandfather in the Tang Dynasty. As for whether there is a husband and grandfather in the Jin Dynasty, it is hard to say, but I tend to have it.
