Chapter 13
The village is not big, with only one main street and the courtyards of thirty or forty households on both sides of the street.
Ala Yanzong and Wula Zhitao walked to the village and saw a young woman squatting at the street corner looking towards them. The village was deserted and there was no one around.
As the two Ala Yanzong men approached, the young woman stood up to greet them.
The young woman was in her mid-twenties, wearing old clothes with a few large patches.
The face is thin, the cheekbones are more prominent, the complexion is pale and bloodless, and the deep eye sockets have a pair of dull green eyes. The yellow messy hair is like weeds and has no luster, and is slovenly.
Before Ala Yanzong could ask about accommodation, the young woman said:
"Give me something to eat!"
The voice was weak.
Seeing that she was pitiful, Alayanzong looked at Ula Zhitao. Ula Zhitao nodded, then grabbed a handful of dried wolf meat from the pouch at the back of her waist and handed it to the young woman.
At the same time, Wula Zhitao asked: "Where is Auntie from?"
The young woman quickly took it and when she saw it was dried meat, her dull blue eyes flashed. She didn't bother to answer, so she put a piece of dried meat into her mouth and started chewing it.
Seeing that she was so hungry, Ala Yanzong comforted her and said:
"Eat slowly, don't choke."
After swallowing a mouthful of dried meat, the young woman took two quick breaths and then said:
"I am from this village." Pointing to the yard behind him, "This is my home."
The two were deeply surprised, and Alayanzong asked: "Since your home is here, why are you begging?"
Perhaps she ate too quickly and choked a little. After swallowing twice, the young woman said, "The man is dead. There is no food in the house. We haven't eaten in two days. There are two children, and they are all gone."
Ala Yanzong was even more surprised and said quickly: "Can you take us to have a look? Maybe the child can survive."
Ula Zhitao also nodded in agreement.
The young woman cried with joy and said repeatedly: "Benefactor! Then you are the savior. Thank you very much!"
After saying that, he turned around and led the two of them into the courtyard behind him.
The courtyard gate is just a broken fence, and there is nothing in the courtyard except two broomsticks and shovels.
The doors and windows of the house are broken, and there is air leakage. There is not much difference between the inside and outside of the house. There are two huts and only four walls.
Two children, a boy and a girl, about six or seven years old, were lying side by side on the earthen bed with their heads facing outward. They looked like twins.
Both children were of the same flesh and blood. The eyes that were originally sunken into the eye sockets became even deeper. Although the eyes were big, they were not very bright.
The child was lying on the bed and saw someone coming. He just turned his head and looked around, but there was no reaction.
The young woman put a piece of dried wolf meat in each child's mouth.
The child just chewed slowly and did not show any signs of hunger.
Ala Yanzong put the burden in the outer room. He came in and took a closer look, and felt the pulses of the two children.
Then he asked the young woman, "Are you saying you haven't eaten in just two days?"
The young woman was startled, stopped chewing and said, "I ate fried rice two days ago, and three days ago, I ate dried salted fish."
Alayanzong determined that the children were suffering from long-term hunger and malnutrition, which led to the deterioration of their body functions. Without sufficient food, they would not live long, and they now did not even have the strength to stand up.
Look at the young woman who is still chewing dried meat. Although she is thin, she is not as close to death as a child.
The young woman quickly finished the handful of dried meat, while the two children could only chew two or three pieces.
The young woman then said to Ala Yanzong: "Give some more, the children still need to eat."
Alayanzong felt that the children had no other diseases and were simply weak due to long-term hunger, so he decided to leave some dried meat for them.
Ula Zhitao gave all the dried meat in her pocket to the young woman.
The young woman actually started eating again, and still only stuffed two pieces into the mouths of the two children. The children did not make any noise, but just chewed slowly.
Alayanzong felt that even if he gave them so much dried meat, it would be difficult for the two children to survive without other sources of food, so he asked the young woman again.
"What is the daily staple food here?"
The young woman answered vaguely: "Salted fish and rice. There are fishermen here. My man helps others and earns some fish every day. If there are merchants passing by, I can exchange it for rice."
Ala Yanzong understood that this was a fishing village, and it must be mainly about fishing, which needed to be sold in exchange for other items.
Alayanzong's original intention was to stay in the village, but there was no place for them to live in this family. The child had no other illness, he was just hungry. Since he had left dried meat, he decided to stay in other people's homes.
Seeing the two of them saying goodbye and leaving, the young woman gave Ala Yanzong a hand.
"Give me more."
Seeing the tears in the young woman's eye sockets, Alayanzong was about to untie the bag to get the dried meat, but saw Wula Zhitao shaking his head.
What she meant was that Ala Yanzong understood that it was not to help the poor but to save the poor. Even if all the dried meat was given to them, it would not save the child's life. Instead, the two of them would have difficulty surviving.
Ala Yanzong felt sad, so he picked up his luggage and walked out of the room and out of the courtyard.
The young woman grabbed a handful of dried wolf meat in her hand and hurriedly followed behind, still shouting, "Give me more."
Although the two of them felt a little sour in their hearts, there was nothing they could do about it.
Walking a little further, Wula Zhitao said: "This woman is very greedy. If she sees the dried meat in the bag, she will ask for more."
Ala Yanzong just nodded and did not reply.
The streets are still empty.
Ala Yanzong took pictures of both gates, but no one responded.
After five or six courtyards of the young woman's house, when he saw a courtyard that was taller than the surrounding houses, Alayanzong went to knock on the door again.
Soon someone opened the door. An old man about sixty years old half-opened the courtyard door and asked, "What do you two do for a living?"
Ala Yanzong stepped forward to salute and replied: "The two of us were passing by here and wanted to bother the old man and spend the night."
When the old man heard this, he asked again: "Where are you two from?"
Alayanzong replied again: "Allah's coastal city-state."
The old man hurriedly replied: "No, no, no." At the same time, he closed the courtyard door.
Ala Yanzong quickly stepped forward and pressed the door panel with one hand, asking urgently: "Why not?"
The old man panicked and answered the question: "There is an inn a hundred meters ahead. You two can stay there."
Then the courtyard door was forcibly closed and the bolt could be heard being bolted.
Ala Yanzong and Wula Zhitao looked at each other, both feeling surprised.
Wula Zhitao shook his head and said to himself: "That's weird old man."
Alayanzong thought for a moment and said: "Maybe they were very panicked when they heard that we came from Allah Coast."
Ula Zhitao thought about it, her parents both died of the plague, and although she is still healthy now, she wonders if she will also get sick and die in a few days.
