Chapter 1 Strange Customs
Our village lives near a river, and there is a strange rule passed down from our ancestors: dead people are buried regardless of age, women are buried in water, and men are buried in the ground.
For water burials, they are buried in the Mang River in front of the village. For burials, they are buried in Longbei Mountain behind the village. There are no exceptions.
My grandma passed away first when I was in elementary school. My grandpa and grandma have always had a very good relationship. Since grandma died, grandpa has been in a trance. He often spends half a day alone in a daze by the Mang River.
Suddenly one day, my grandfather called my father and uncle to him and told him that he would be buried with my grandma after his death.
When my father and uncle heard this, their expressions instantly changed, as if they had heard something terrible, but in order to forgive my grandfather, they still agreed.
Two years later, my grandfather became bedridden. As he was dying, my father and uncle began to discuss funeral arrangements and planned to prepare a coffin in advance.
If you need a coffin, you will naturally be buried.
I wasn't very sensible at that time, so I just thought about my grandfather's kindness and secretly told him about it.
Who would have thought that my grandfather had been carrying a gun for half his life and had a very violent temper. On the night when I told him this, he struggled to get up and threw himself into the river.
As soon as the news came out, the village exploded, and all the men over the age of 18 were driven out of the river to retrieve Grandpa's body. The village chief and several elderly people stood on the shore, looking gloomy and worried.
I thought I had killed my grandpa, and I squatted on the shore crying from morning to night. I overheard the village chief telling my uncle that if the body could not be retrieved within the first seven days, our family would be in serious trouble.
I was feeling sad at the time, so I didn’t pay attention to it when I heard it. I still went to the river to watch over it every day. It wasn’t until the sixth day that my grandfather’s body was not found, so my father and mother panicked and hurriedly dragged me home and locked me up.
In the house, I was told not to go out.
I couldn't get out of the house, so I had to stay there and cry whenever I thought of my grandpa. I cried until I was tired at night, so I fell on the bed and fell asleep.
In a daze, I had a dream. I dreamed that my home was flooded, and only the bed board I was lying on was floating on the water, surrounded by dark river water, like a bottomless hole. Just inside me
When I was so scared that I wanted to call my dad, the black water suddenly swung away with a splash, and a big hand wrapped with an iron chain suddenly stretched out, grabbed my ankle and dragged me into the water.
Even in my dream, I could feel the coolness emanating from that pale hand, like a piece of ice stuffed into my clothes on a July day. The cold made me tremble and wake up from my dream.
I sat up from the bed in a cold sweat. It was already dawn outside. I glanced at the floor subconsciously. It was dry. Then I quickly got out of bed and put on my shoes. I ran out of the room and opened the door. The locked door of the main room suddenly opened.
It opened. My father was sitting on the stone pier at the door, with red eyes, as if he had just cried, and he was cursing Grandpa with obscene words.
I couldn't hear him and quarreled with him for a few words, but my father stopped talking and lowered his head and sobbed quietly, which made me a little confused. It wasn't until noon that I found out that my mother was dead. Just last night, my grandpa died on his seventh day.
that night.
At that moment, I felt like the sky was falling. I ran towards the river crying, but I was stopped by my uncle at the intersection. The uncle said with red eyes: "Your mother is going up the mountain!"
I was stunned for a few seconds. I didn't have time to ask why I wanted to go up the mountain. I turned around and went to Longbei Mountain again. But after I took two steps, my shoulder was pressed by a big hand.
