Chapter 441 Answer

Before this, Ye Zhou had carefully read the documents on AES technology provided by the simulator. What he had never understood was why the part about image recognition in the algorithm module was so huge and complicated. At first, he thought it was to ensure image accuracy, but now it seems that it is not the same thing at all.

This part of the code exists only to solve the problem of neural self-correction.

There is an essential difference between high-precision cameras and human eyes. A very simple particle is that in the civil field, even the most advanced cameras cannot dynamically adjust the gain of areas with different brightness like cells in the retinal ganglion. To achieve such a function, the so-called sme-hdr algorithm is needed.

The sme-hdr algorithm is implemented through a back-end processing system. In this process, a large number of redundant data sets will inevitably appear. These data sets will immediately activate the self-correction function of the human brain nerves, thereby correcting them into correct visual signals.

But the problem is that these final versions of visual signals will be written inversely to the camera system, thereby dynamically adjusting the data of the sme-hdr algorithm. The two constantly interact with each other, and in the end, even if they do not become a dead cycle, they will occupy a lot of computing power.

Moreover, dynamic brightness gain is not the only problem faced by the camera, such as differences in central analytical capabilities, differences in single-photon analytical capabilities, too      mapping algorithm, differences in color and gamut sensitivity... Various problems are superimposed together, making the difficulty of error correction geometrically increase.

If a computer can withstand such calculations, what about the human brain?

So, just halfway through the experiment, Yang Yijin had already seen Yaoyao's discomfort---because she was really tired at that time.

Ye Zhou sighed deeply. He did not expect before that what restricted the development of AVS technology was not the technology itself, but a factor that was almost ignored by everyone: the camera.

Moreover, the problem is not because the camera is not advanced enough, but on the contrary, because its functions are too advanced compared to the human eye.

The resolution is too high, the color distortion is too small, and the shape distortion is almost non-existent...

If it is expressed in easy-to-understand language, the visual system of a normal person is a third-rate camera with a first-rate processor, but under the AVS system, it becomes a first-rate camera with a second-rate processor. Because according to the current solution, the neural pathway established by the AVS system cannot achieve the agility of the original neural pathways of the human body.

As one goes up and down, problems become natural.

There are only two ways to solve this problem: either customize a dedicated camera or perform invasive surgery to widen nerve pathways.

However, the cost increase and convenience brought about by these two methods are extremely unsuitable for large-scale promotion.

Therefore, the final solution is to use algorithms to make up for the defects of the device.

This obviously violates the principle of "code should be as concise as possible" in computer science, so it actually has a negative impact.

Thinking of this, Ye Zhou shook his head gently.

I have to say that the researchers on my timeline are lucky. This kind of luck is not because we directly obtained the AVS technology, but after obtaining the technology, we selected the most typical subject with the strongest self-correction ability in the first experiment.

Such luck tests the most extreme situation at once, and on another timeline, I'm afraid that thousands of tests will not be enough to achieve such an effect.

After listening to Ye Zhou explaining the cause of the problem, Chen Li's team also felt a sudden realization, especially Zhu Xuan, who had already discovered a large amount of redundant code in the algorithm and also parsed the functionality, but he could not understand what problems these codes were used to deal with.

Now, all doubts have answers.

"So, if we want to continue to develop AVS technology, we have to start with building a camera?"

Hearing Chen Li’s question, Ye Zhou nodded slightly and replied:

"Either make a camera or have a craniotomy. The risk of the latter is too high. You can't just open a hole in the back of your head like in a science fiction film, right? The risk of infection is not a joke."

"Okay... But in this case, this experiment will be postponed. It is not difficult to create a camera with similar functions as the human eye. The main problem is the debugging process. I guess this process will not be able to be completed in less than three to five years."

Chen Li looked a little disappointed. His eyes seemed to accidentally glance at Yaoyao who was sitting quietly beside him. Everyone could see what he was thinking.

The cruelest thing in this world is not to lose hope, but to take it away in a short time after regaining hope.

There is a saying, "I could have endured darkness, if I hadn't seen the light." This seemingly pretentious sentence is a true portrayal of Yaoyao.

She had seen light, the kind in the literal sense, but now she is again in darkness.

Ye Zhou walked forward and touched Yaoyao's hair. She raised her face in confusion, as if she hadn't understood why she could see it just now, but now her eyes turned gray and white again.

"Uncle, is your computer out of power?"

Hearing her words, everyone next to her had a bitter expression, only Ye Zhou smiled and replied:

"It's not that there's no electricity, it's that your new eyes need rest."

After saying that, he did not go to see Yaoyao's reaction, but turned to Chen Li and spoke:

"Don't think of the problem so complicated."

"Developing a new camera is something to do, but this does not mean that the action of helping the blind restore the light will be paused."

"The problem now is very simple. The computing power of the nervous system and the density of the camera's information and command set conflict."

"So that's the case, just subtract some information sets."

"Remove the information set of colors, depth of field, and only shapes and light and darkness."

“Isn’t it also a huge improvement to turn blind people into full color blindness?”

....

Two hours later, the AVS system after removing the color and depth of field lenses as required by Ye Zhou, completed the test, and the test results made everyone feel surprised.

Before this, they generally believed that human judgment of depth of field came from binocular eyes, that is, dual cameras, but the facts proved that the adaptability of the human brain was much stronger than they imagined.

It is difficult to thread a needle in a single eye, but not impossible.

And Yaoyao obviously has amazing talent in this regard.

Just over an hour after the experiment started, she was able to walk in the room with the visual signals transmitted by the AVS system, going up and down steps and avoiding obstacles.

This seemed to be effortless to her, and even when Chu Ya helped her remove the interface electrode, she seemed a little overwhelmed.

"Okay Yaoyao, you sit aside and wait for a while. We need to assemble the equipment so that you can take it away."

Yaoyao nodded obediently and squatted on the ground. Yang Yijin walked over and picked her up and put her on the sofa outside the laboratory.

The assembly work was carried out by several junior researchers under Chen Li, and he didn't need to do it himself, so he sat with Ye Zhou and others.

"What you did at the beginning was a mobile plan?"

Ye Zhou looked at the AVS device gradually assembled into a helmet style and asked curiously.

"It must be a mobile solution, otherwise, if the experiment is successful and the subject cannot take it away, it would be nonsense... Moreover, the information collection process is not over yet. Letting her take it to further optimize the algorithm in complex environments is actually helpful for subsequent equipment improvements."

Ye Zhou nodded and did not ask any further. Instead, he turned to Yaoyao on the side and asked:

"Yaoyao, new eyes, do you feel used to it?"

Yaoyao on the sofa frowned and thought for a moment, and replied:

“No color.”

"Yes, there will be color in the future."

"But I want to see the color."

"But there is nothing to do now. If you want to see the color, your head will not be able to stand it."

"I can bear it!"

Ye Zhou laughed silently. After all, she is still a childish character. When she encounters what she really wants, she will still act like a peer and act like a spoiled person.

Thinking of this, Ye Zhou did not continue to linger with her topic. He just deliberately paused for a moment and continued to ask:

"I can see it later. What do you want to do?"

“Go to kindergarten.”

Hearing this answer, everyone on the sofa laughed.

After laughing, I felt a little sad again.

An accident at home was actually when she had just finished kindergarten, so her influence on "schooling" probably only stayed at that time.

She can learn a lot from her mobile phone, but she can't learn the concepts of elementary school and junior high school after kindergarten.

"You are almost seven years old and can't go to kindergarten anymore. You should be in elementary school."

"Then go to elementary school."

"What after elementary school? When you grow up? What do you want to do?"

This is a classic question. It seems that when all adults face children who have just started to go to school, they can't help but ask "What do you want to do when you grow up", just like when facing children who have just learned to talk and walk, they always ask them "where are their parents?"

Ye Zhou thought she would give answers such as astronauts and scientists, and even thought nonsensely whether she would say she wanted to do lumberjacks, because at her home yesterday, she saw the cartoon on her phone about lumberjacks.

But unexpectedly, her answer was different from what everyone guessed.

"I want to be a firefighter."

Ye Zhou was stunned and asked:

"Do you know what firefighters do?"

"I know."

Yaoyao's face showed a bit of serious expression like a little adult. After a moment, her head lowered, her fingers slowly entangled together, and then she whispered:
