Chapter 21 The Consciousness of a Robot

Victor saw a rusty robot limping towards the laboratory through the lens. There were many bullet holes on its body, and the iron sheet flew, and the side close to the engine was already soaked in black with oil.

"Britz? Why did it get hurt?"

Victor opened the door and greeted Britz. The bloated robot, three meters tall, needed to shrink its limbs before rolling into the laboratory, and then the oil leaked all over the floor...

"There are 27 bullet holes in the whole body, the fuel tank is damaged, the left eye is falling off, and the legs are deformed. Except for the inside of the engine, the inside of the engine is almost hollowed out... Tell me, who destroyed you like this?"

Victor immediately gave Britz a full-body examination and repeated the damaged area carefully.

"I don't feel any pain...thank you...for your concern."

Britz replied in a staccato, slow mechanical voice, and their conversation sounded like two robots communicating.

"I know you won't hurt, tell me what happened?" Victor's third hand knocked on Britz's iron sheet, making a thud warning.

"Say it...it's a long story..."

After helping Victor transport patients, Britz went to the source of the poison gas leakage to deal with alchemy waste alone. This is its job.

It was originally an independent robot without following anyone's command. Helping Victor just go along the way. In fact, Britz has been running alone with Victor for more than ten years.

Britz came to the corner of the collapsed street. As expected, it was an alchemy laboratory. A huge industrial water storage tank fell to the ground and a big hole was knocked out. The green alchemy liquid accumulated more than a foot high on the ground. The poisonous fog covered with Zuan was formed by the volatile and mixed into the haze.

After finding the source of the poisonous fog, Britz took action steadily, sucked the alchemy liquid into his body, and then filled it into a sealed jar prepared in advance.

In the subsequent work, Britz discovered that a large pit was blown up below the laboratory, and a "sinking hook" mine that had been mined for many years was connected.

Due to the existence of the mine, most of the alchemy liquid flows into deeper places, and Britz does not have the corresponding function and cannot go down to the pit to collect waste.

After repeatedly confirming that there was no sign of life in the mine, Britz began to carry stones and prepare to seal the hole that emitted poisonous gas. However, unexpectedly, a scarred man suddenly walked out of the thick fog behind him. He was wearing a miner's uniform and filled with various reinforcements. Without saying a word, he swept at Britz with a machine gun.

Britz was just a cleaning robot with almost no ability to fight back and could only eat these bullets. The lenses on his left eye were blown off immediately, and even the other party's face was not clearly identified. Only the hot gunfire and green trachea were seen.

In addition to being bloated and inflexible, Britz was pushed into the pit by gunfire in a moment.

The huge weight made Britz's right leg, which was the first to land, fall into a bend instantly, and its ability to move greatly reduced, but fortunately the murderer did not chase him down.

Britz waited for a while, and after the murderer left, he tried to hang himself up with two mechanical flying claws, but his weight was as high as several tons, and his slender flying claws could not bear this weight at all.

Britz quickly realized that to escape from this collapsed mine, he had to "lose weight" for himself, so he dismantled his liquid storage tank, radiator, and spare energy from his round body and left only the engine and half-full broken fuel tank.

In this way, the "fat" Britz successfully escaped from the mine. This time his "injury" was too severe and exceeded Britz's self-maintenance level, so it could only come to the laboratory to seek Victor's help before the fuel was exhausted.

"I don't remember having a big miner covered in scars, I had an enhancement surgery on someone like this, which means we can't find the murderer."

Victor patiently listened to Britzchi's extremely slow story, and at this time, Britz's fuel was about to run out and was about to turn off the power.

"Britz, your damage this time is too serious. The workload you need to repair is too great. I just happened to have a semi-finished robot. Now I have ported your server, so that's all I can do."

"Okay... listen to your... Thank you."

Before Britz could say thank you, Victor pinched off the power supply.

The laser released by the third hand cuts the seriously corroded iron sheet, and the server loaded with Britz's intelligence was firmly held in Victor's hand.

Half an hour later, Britz returned to this world again, supplying electricity to his eyes, and Victor's image appeared in front of it.

"Thank you." Britz stretched out a finger and shook hands with Victor's seemingly relieved and satisfied gaze.

It set off and walked twice. This new body, which had not had time to leave the factory, was much easier to use than it originally was. The shiny thickened steel body was many times stronger than the original rusty iron sheet, and the fuel utilization efficiency was higher. It would not smoke all over the body as before. The two flying claws were stronger and more accurate.

But Britz always feels that something is missing and makes it unable to be happy.

"This is a transport robot, and the abdomen is freed up larger and more comfortable space for transporting patients. The new radiator and heat insulation layer can keep the internal temperature of the transport robot below 40°, and will no longer cause secondary damage to the patient due to metal heat conduction."

After listening to Victor's instructions, Britz opened the window on his belly, reached in and dug it out, and then he figured out what he was sure of.

It walked straight into the parts pile and renovated itself. This new body did not have the function of treating alchemy waste. It had to install the processing function for itself again. The source of the poison gas was still waiting for it to be processed. If it was not properly handled, the pollution caused by the alchemy liquid would not be cut off.

It must assume this responsibility, which is Britz's enlightenment, the enlightenment of a robot.

Victor did not intervene in helping Britz modify or stop it. In his mind, Britz was his own child, and he would respect its ideas, even if they had different beliefs.

"Britz...do good things, why...he wants to...beat me?"

While modifying himself, Britz asked Victor his own questions. As a robot with thoughts, Britz is always integrating himself into human society. It learns human knowledge, human behavior, and human views, that is, to get close to humans and make himself look more like a person, rather than a machine.

In its opinion, its compatriots are too stupid to communicate at all, and on some levels, they are more like humans.

As the developer of Britz, Victor was his initial learning object. Compared to "father", Britz prefers to use the word "enlightenment mentor" to call Victor.

"I don't know his intention, but attacking a harmless robot for no reason. His behavior is bad and he can be characterized as a person who does bad things and a bad person."

Victor said sternly, knowing how to speak can help Britz better understand what he means.

"Bad guy...bad guy...I want to...fix him!"

Britz buzzed all over his body because he accidentally removed the stand that fixed the engine, and it was trying to find a way to retrieve it in his messy belly.

"Britz, bad things can be divided into many situations, but in most cases, they cannot be repaired by replacing some parts. Depending on the degree of bad things, the methods of handling them are also different. Slightly punished, and severely, they must be destroyed; and even if he becomes better, the bad things he has done will become stains and follow his life, and they will not replace the broken parts with new ones like machines and put them into use."

Victor came behind Britz and looked up at the steam robot squatting taller than him.

"Humans... are really difficult to understand. Victor...this is the reason...you want to... turn humans... into...robots...? It's easy to...repair?"

"Maybe." Victor looked at his scabbed wound, the connection point between flesh and machinery, and his thoughts drifted to the distance.

"But I... still... think... being a human being... is better. Britz... wants to be a... good person!"
