Chapter 27 Commencement

Roger ran over to greet the coachman and his party, and he knew that the other party must have brought good news because he saw the Mediterranean Sea sitting on the cart.

A monk would not leave the monastery without special circumstances. It is only one thing to let Dean Benedictin come over long distances.

"Hi, Roger, I bring you good news." The coachman greeted Roger happily, "The request for the establishment of a new diocese has been passed, I brought your letter from your mother and Bishop Messina, and see who I brought?"

Only blind people can't see it. Roger happily met Dean Benedictin.

Roger thanked the coachman and said to the dean: "Director Benedictin, please follow me. I will introduce you to a master, the architect Tom, who participated in and completed the construction of the Tower of London and received praise from King William."

"O God, a true master. Roger, my brother, I really don't know how to thank you.

A new parish, a new church. This is the most effective way to demonstrate our piety and the reputation and strength of the monastery.

You solved the big problem for us. On the way I came, I was still worried that I could not find a good builder and that I could not build a good church.

And now, you have prepared a famous craftsman for us!”

Roger put his ear on the dean and said, "The asking price is not cheap, but you can try to keep it down."

"This is not a problem." The dean said with a generous smile.

Roger also said: "The Baron agrees that you will cut down the wood from the mountain and collect the stone from this mountain, but there will be a fee."

Roger was a little embarrassed, and he said, "You know, the Baron is not ungodly, he is just, well, a little bit tight."

"This is a perfectly reasonable request," said the Dean affirmatively. "In fact, you have done enough, and I cannot accept more favors. If everything is at your fingertips, how can we show our piety."

The two walked to the entrance of the village and the master came up politely. After seeing the ceremony, the master honestly explained that his team had never built a church.

However, the master added: "In order to undertake the Cathedral of Enonimas in Spain, I specially visited all the churches in the holy city of Jerusalem. We made sufficient preparations and I have the confidence to build a church."

The dean was very interested in the holy city mentioned by the master. He asked in detail. The master told the truth. The dean learned about the master’s experience over the past three years.

The dean exclaimed: "O Lord, omniscient and omnipotent, all this is your arrangement."

Roger meditated on the side, wasn’t this my arrangement?

The dean continued: "Who knows that a parish would be established in this desolate place?"

Roger thought, I know.

“Who knows that a church will be built on this flooded land?”

Roger thought, I know too.

"Who can make a famous master come here from thousands of miles?"

Roger thought, this was a coincidence.

"Who can let this master go to the Holy City to observe before coming?"

Roger thought, this was a coincidence.

"This is all God's arrangement, and it is the Lord that allows us to spread His gospel here. This is the will of the Lord, and I swear to obey. Master Tom, please stay and help us build this church."

Roger was speechless, things were different when it came to the clergy.

The master was shocked by the dean's words, and he showed a thoughtful look, and then seemed to have been enlightened.

The master said, "Yes, all this is God's arrangement. It was He who asked me to go to the Holy City, it was He who asked me to prepare for the construction of a church, it was He who asked me to come here, it was God's will. Yes, Dean Benedictin, I am willing to stay and build this church. I will show you what I have learned and what I know."

Everyone praised God devoutly, and Roger could only mix in and pretend.

He thought, what am I? A broker arranged by God? Or the one who doesn’t charge?

The basin became lively in the next period of time. Roger seemed to have returned to his father's convening the army, and he could see black spots gathering every day.

Roger arranged for mountaineers to station on the hillsides on both sides of the construction site, and they built simple sheds. Roger felt that this was convenient for work and was far away from mosquitoes.

But he was still worried, so he arranged for the mountain people to fight a big battle with mosquitoes in the basin, and achieved huge results at a small cost, forcing the mosquitoes to turn into sporadic guerrillas.

The priest also came once, and the carriage he brought sent a batch of food and supplies, and then hurriedly left to prepare for the second batch of transportation.

The coachman returned to the town and when he came back, he brought the whole vehicle of axes, iron pickaxes and other tools.

Roger estimated that the blacksmith's stove had probably not been fired during this period.

With the coordination of the forest ranger, the tools were quickly assigned to the most suitable person.

Amir sent the entire design to Roger's mind. This design is the final version after a deep discussion between the two.

According to Roger's idea, the deep ditch follows the canyon entrance to the west along the north side of the basin, passes through another canyon entrance, and then goes east and finally flows into the Alcantara River.

The deep ditch is temporarily reinforced with rows of wooden piles, and then it is considered to be converted into a stone-built embankment in the future.

The canal connecting the two dams was cancelled. A spacious stone-made short canal was added to the sides of both dams, each connecting the deep ditch through a stone water gate, which was used to discharge floods and control the water volume of the reservoir.

Roger was worried that stone walls would affect progress, but Amir insisted that only stones could resist the erosion of floods.

In order to discuss this, Roger specifically asked the master to discuss it. The master agreed to ask his stonemason to help without affecting the progress of the church, but it would be charged and not cheap. Roger gritted his teeth and accepted it.

Roger also found a stonemason to ask if the construction period was too late. He said, "Is it OK to give you an accurate statement."

The stonemason replied: "As soon as the materials arrive, you will build a wall for you, and you will come to see the stone gate in two weeks."

Roger then felt relieved.

Amir took Roger to draw the construction scope with grated limestone, and he also led people to repair the lifting machinery in several key places. According to Amir's introduction, this is a masterpiece left by the ancient Romans.

Roger noticed that there were two models, one was to fix a mast with a pulley and use a winch to pull the cable through the pulley on the top of the rod to lift the weight.

The other type uses two masts to form a herringbone shape, which moves the lifting object horizontally, but has a very small amplitude.

In Roger's eyes, both mechanical operations are very difficult, but they are better than nothing.

Then Amir took ten strong men, holding hammers and axes, like special forces entering the enemy's back, leaving the main battlefield to Roger.

During this period, Dean Benedicuddin came to Roger.

The dean told Roger that he had written that the trustee had taken to the monastery, and that the monks would come soon with their stock supplies, but he was not sure about the exchange ratio of these supplies and building materials.

Roger was not clear either. He remembered the eyes of the traveling merchant. He suggested that the dean bring him, and he told the dean that the building materials could be used on credit.

He said: "You can use it first. Would we not trust you?"

The dean left with satisfaction.

Angelica came to chat with Roger. She chatted with him as soon as she had time. She told Dean Roger that he had been preaching in the village recently, and everyone was convinced of him.

The bird of swallows chirped and described, and she said happily: "I haven't missed it once."

Master Tom also came to Roger, after Roger looked for him.

The master told Roger that he was going to send an apprentice to Mount Etna to collect volcanic ash, but they were not in enough staff.

The master discussed with Roger. Roger wanted to see the master gritting his teeth, so he agreed to arrange for villagers to help without affecting the construction period of the dam, but it would be charged and not cheap.

The master did not change his expression and politely retired.

Roger probably went to the dean to make a report because the next day he saw the dean chatting with the Baron, and then the Baron greeted Roger.

So Roger had to grit his teeth and admit it and sent someone to help for free.

But Roger also kept a hand. He believed that the master must have a way to distinguish the quality of volcanic ash, and he asked the villagers who helped to remember the collection location.
