Chapter 9 The Eerie Night Shadow (Part 2)
"Oh, here it's here."
When Joel and his men arrived at the King's Gate together with their horses and guards, Barrit had already assembled the guards of the King's Gate. They gathered next to the brazier under the shed to sort out their equipment. Some looked at Joel and the others with a melancholy and indifferent expression or curious and enthusiastic look.
"So many people?" Ronnie frowned. After approaching, he looked at Barrit and said, "Even the movements of so many people, even beasts, must be scared away?"
Barrit raised his eyes and looked coldly at Ronnie riding on the horse, then turned to look at the guard who brought his crossbow and quiver: "Why do you think we stand in the snow at night? We are guards, not hunters. The hunting of wild animals is left to hunters and mercenaries. Our duty is to protect the lord's territory and maintain the peace of his territory.
"If those fools can't see the torches of our team one night, they will come to the lord to complain the next day. Do you think they will believe, 'We didn't light the torches to capture criminals and not because we were in the bed of a bitch'?"
Barrit's words caused the young guard who was equipped for him to sneer. Barrit glared at the guard and he quickly put away his smile.
"But if you do this, you can't solve the problem at all." Ronnie said relentlessly.
Barrit sighed, then raised his eyes and saw Ronnie again: "Are you deaf? I said, we are guards, not hunters, nor mercenaries. It is not our job to solve the problem, but yours."
Ronnie wanted to say something, but was stopped by Joel. He frowned and looked at Joel, but only saw the eyes behind the white mask looking at him coldly.
Arguing with the nobles was a stupid thing. Joel wanted to tell him, but Ronnie didn't continue, so Joel didn't say that.
"May I ask," Barritt cleared his throat and looked at Hemi, who was sitting behind Joel, "What else do you need to prepare? Bells, branches, vanilla, etc."
"No, thank you, I don't need to prepare anything." Hemi replied hesitantly.
"That's easy." Barry nodded, then turned around.
Hemi immediately whispered to Joel: "Did I say something should be prepared? In this way, will they think I am a pretended saint?"
"Are you?" Joel asked.
Hemi was stunned for a moment, and then replied in a low voice: "I don't know."
"Okay, guys." Barrit announced loudly at this time, and the guards who were still sitting on the bench next to the brazier also stood up. "Finish your work early. I have already asked the girls in the Red Gallery to warm up your bed. But I have to give it to myself."
Barrit's words attracted a foul laughter. Then the city gate slowly opened, and the guards lit torches with a brazier, and then walked out the door one after another. The cold wind blew into the king's door, rolling in large scattered snowflakes. The guards wrapped their cloaks, half-helmets, chain mail and necklaces covered half of their faces, only a pair of eyes were revealed.
"Hiss Saint," Barritt turned over the horse, and then came to Joel and Hemi and said, "Please be sure not to run around. Our guards are not as fast as the horses inside. If something happens, we cannot bear the responsibility."
After saying that, Barrit gave Joel a threatening look and drove his horse toward the city gate. Almost six guards holding crossbows stood on both sides of them, standing silently in the wind and snow.
"Why did he glar at you?" Ronnie frowned and looked at Joel in a low voice as soon as Barrit left.
"He told me not to escape with her." Joel replied coldly.
"Tsk, suspicious." Ronnie shook his head dissatisfiedly. He suddenly remembered something, and then looked at Joel, "You don't think so, do you?"
Joel did not answer, but drove the horse to follow the guards who left the King's Gate, and the silent guards followed them slowly.
...
Fan never thought that he had underestimated Norbert's madness.
No, no, I have never underestimated him. Fan Du told himself that this guy has always been a lunatic, but I mistakenly thought that he had become self-control after following the Beggar's Son over the years. He just hid his fangs.
When Fan heard that Norbert had summoned his "good guys", he felt something was wrong.
"What do you want to do?" Fandu raised the courage to ask him.
"It's not your business." Norbert sat on the crate, his eyes staring at the sheepskin map placed on another crate, and the flames pounded in the lantern. Then he saw that Fan didn't move, so he raised his eyes and looked at him, urging him, "Go quickly."
Norbert's "good guy" now has fourteen people left, most of whom were accomplices who followed Norbert as bandits in the south - just like Fandu, so Fandu knew them almost and knew a few of them quite well.
So he almost immediately found a few of them in the "Red Gallery Tent".
They looked at Fandu in confusion because they also knew Fandu: they knew that this guy didn't have the courage to come to them alone, especially on such nights. So they immediately frowned after hearing Fandu's words, because they knew there was something wrong.
When Vando brought the last Norbert's "good guy" to the abandoned wooden house that was temporarily searching for in the alley, Vando found that Norbert seemed to have told the others in the wooden house about his plan, because almost no one else present had a good face except Norbert himself.
"You're crazy." Fandu heard someone shake his head and said, and Fandu deeply agreed with this sentence.
"Norbert, you are getting crazy." Fandu looked at the man. He knew him, and like himself, he was the one who first followed Norbert to be a bandit.
Unexpectedly, there was such a confidant among these scumbags. Fan began to regret not asking him to drink twice as much as possible before.
The man didn't know what Fan, who was inconspicuous at the door, thought, but continued to look at Norbert, who was sitting on the wooden crate with his hands crossed and tightly clenched: "Okay, it's actually not as crazy as before, but it's almost the same."
"What do you want to do?" asked the young boy who had just followed Fandu.
He was one of the latest "good guys" of Norbert. He heard that he killed people in the south, fled to the north, and was taken in by his brotherhood, and then became Norbert's subordinates.
This kid is very arrogant and looks down on Fandu like other old members. Fandu doesn't know him as well. After all, he is still young and often plays with a sharpened dagger in his hand.
"Hey," a member of the oldest mouth full of yellow teeth smiled. He was the oldest person around Norbert. "Listen, the boss wants you to stab that bastard Barrit to death with your little baby."
The young man was stunned. Just when Fan thought he had finally seen Norbert's madness, the boy smiled and said with a wicked smile: "I've wanted to do this for a long time! I can do it while he went to the tavern or went to find his little lovers."
"Ha, good boy." The old member walked over and patted the young man on the shoulder with a smile, then the expression on his face suddenly slammed the boy's face, knocking him to the ground, just lying at Fandu's feet.
"Kill a Sendway family member in Sentinel Town? You are not crazy, you are stupid!" The old member spat at him, then pointed at him and said, "Don't let me hear you again, you will kill us."
Then the old member turned to look at Norbert, and walked towards him: "I don't agree with this plan. Boss, although you have always been the boss, obviously you have not always been right. The admiration for the son of the beggar made you dumb your head."
Norbert raised his eyes and looked at him coldly: "I'm not here to ask for your opinions and consent."
The old member shrugged and walked aside: "But boss, we don't say anything else. If you do this in Sentinel Town, you will definitely be involved in the Brotherhood. The old fox Trenber might take advantage of the problem and find trouble for the son of the beggar."
"No, they can't find an excuse." Norbert lowered his head and looked at Fandu's perspective, his eyes hidden in the shadow.
"They will take the little saint to patrol outside the city tonight. They thought they would find some beast or the little monster in the fairy tale, so even if two people die, they will think it was the thing they were looking for."
The others were silent. Fan lowered his head and saw the boy spitting out a few broken teeth and a mouthful of blood foam, and then stood up again.
"We are not killers or assassins." Someone said uneasy.
"And those guards are always in groups. How should we find Barrit from it? And that guy has great sword skills."
"What should I do with the weapon? It's easy to see the knife wounds, and they will know that it was done by people rather than monsters." Another person asked.
"Are you going to let them not find the body?" Norbert said impatiently, "Damn it, don't let me think about everything, you can use your brain occasionally!"
While saying this, Norbert stood up: "This matter must be done neatly and must not be allowed to find clues and find the brotherhood. I have asked someone to prepare a carriage in the village outside the city, and as soon as the matter is finished, I will immediately rush to the south to avoid the limelight."
As he said that, Norbert looked at his silent "good guys" and said in a deep voice: "Head, the son of the beggar is very generous this time, because this matter is very important."
Then Norbert showed a smile that was most familiar and fearful to Fan Du.
“This is a big deal.”
...
Hermi was wrapped in a new cloak, light green, with golden vines embroidered on it. Joel and Ronnie blocked her behind her and asked her to replace the dirty cloak.
The new cloak looks very expensive and is a style used by the nobles, so both the material and the warmth are much better than the previous cheap item used by travelers. So Joel did not refuse this gift.
After putting on the new cloak, Hemi did look like a saint, but she kept her head down and hid her face behind Joel, so others didn't know what she looked like. Of course, Joel asked her to do this.
"Just go around Sentinel Town and cross the village," Barrit shouted loudly, as if explaining to Joel and the others, "During this time, let's see if the Saint can find something. We are quite looking forward to it!"
"What should I do?" After hearing Barritt's words, Ronnie immediately rode towards Joel. He asked nervously, "If I can't find anything tonight, wouldn't I be regarded as a liar?"
Joel did not answer. He did not have the habit of discussing problems with others, and he was more accustomed to thinking about problems by himself. If Anthony was present, he would definitely explain it to the mercenary clearly, right? Joel thought to himself.
He would definitely tell the mercenary: No matter what Hemi can find, the Sendway family will not do anything to her, because doing so will not do them at all. Unless someone suddenly comes out to prove that Hemi is not a saint and lists the evidence, the Sendway family will not expose the matter.
And what made Joel anxious at this moment was these things: he was afraid that there would be such people, after all, this was the territory of the Beggar Brotherhood, and they were coveting Hemi's identity as the "saint" and no one knew what they would do; and Joel knew that Hemi did have something incredible.
Maybe she is really a saint, maybe Joel thought to himself that if it were in Lengxi Town in the past, Joel might have cheered. But now it is different. It is a war era, and it is likely that it is a more tragic and protracted war than the "death battle" three years ago.
There are so many symbols represented by the title "Saint" that Joel didn't want Hermi to have such a heavy burden on her back.
Especially after Joel learned from Anthony about the situation of the chief craftsmen of Stonefort.
The chief craftsmen remained neutral in the mercenary camp, and have always been like this. Not to mention the death battle three years ago, now that the kingdom and the principality have started war again, the principality has sent assassins and killers to assassinate these chief craftsmen. According to Anthony, three people have been killed.
Even the chief craftsman who declared neutrality was treated like this, so there is no need to say more about the "saint" with a higher status and more important identity.
Even Master Nawell told them specifically that the saint of the Principality also sensed that a new saint appeared on the kingdom. Joel knew that he was warning himself that taking the saint's action was a very dangerous thing.
Seeing that Joel didn't answer him, Ronnie tickled, and looked at Hemi, who was sitting behind Joel: "Miss Saint, can I ask you how you want to find that...what they are looking for?"
Hermi did not answer immediately, she paused, and then whispered to Ronnie: "I can see those things."
Hemi's words not only made Ronnie stunned, but even Joel turned his head.
"You... can you see?" Ronnie seemed to be thinking about the meaning of Hemi's words, and then he asked with a stiff expression: "You mean you can see? No, not this, what I want to ask is that you say you can see..."
Ronnie seemed to have confused himself. He frowned and then asked nervously, "Did you... have you seen it? Those things?"
Hemi did not answer, but Ronnie saw her nodding slightly.
Ronnie suddenly felt the hair on his back stand up, and he asked with a numb scalp: "I mean... are there really those things?"
Without a moment of silence, she replied faintly: "I don't know. But there is indeed something in the dark, well, there are indeed beasts. But not all of them are beasts, something is mixed between them."
Then Joel heard Hemi say something that made him frown.
"They saw me, too."
...
Barritt always felt something was wrong tonight.
He always rides at the front of the team.
Ah, he was so familiar with this land. He still remembered that he was riding a horse from the farmland here when he was a teenager, but it was not winter, but autumn. In order to chase a big gray rabbit, the stupid horse limped in the field and almost broke Barrit's neck.
It was just like his own backyard, and he could ride over with his eyes closed. But it was different tonight.
It suddenly became a little unfamiliar, which made Barrit a little annoyed. He held the torch and glanced at the darkness around him coldly. The night here also became unfamiliar. In the past, Barrit often brought his little lover to come here for a try, sometimes in the wheat field, and sometimes directly on the horse's back.
But now Barritt looked around but couldn't imagine the feeling that way back then. No, something was wrong. Barritt reached out and grabbed the grip of the crossbow placed on the left side of the saddle.
Barrit discovered that other guards also noticed this. The guys who often blew the bull and told jokes to dispel sleepiness were silent at this moment. The wind was still blowing, and large snowflakes fell. This was the first time Barrit hated winter so much. Although he didn't like it before, he was particularly annoying this time.
"Hey, little saint!" Barrit suddenly shouted loudly, scaring many people around him, but they immediately calmed down and their tense nerves relaxed a little. "I said, little saint, have you found anything strange?" Barrit asked deliberately with a smile, as if he was joking.
But Hemi raised his voice and replied, "Yes, sir."
Her words made the team fall into death-like silence, and even the smile on Barritt's face froze.
Hemi cleared her throat. She thought her voice was too small and was covered by the wind and snow, so she shouted louder: "Yes, sir!"
"I did see something strange!"
