Chapter Thirty-Four Rural Plans
On August 1, the third year of Chongzhen, Yuan Chonghuan was sentenced to death in the West City for charges such as "ineffective orders, relying on bullying and hidden people, and using market rice to steal, and using money to kill the generals, and using the enemy to drive away, and the troops did not fight. When he arrived at the city, he gathered four reinforcements and sent them to dismiss the whole city. He also secretly brought the lama and asked to enter the city." Lin Chunhong was sentenced to death in the western city and abandoned his body in the city in September. After learning about this from the residence in September, he couldn't calm down.
Lin Chunhong clearly remembers that after Jiannu plundered the capital in the second year of Chongzhen and three years, the country's fortunes of the Ming Dynasty turned down. Outside, he was defeated repeatedly, and the defense line was tightened to the Ningjin line; internally, most of the troops who served the king fled and scattered in North China and Shaanxi, and immediately became the backbone of the peasant uprising, turning the entire Ming Dynasty uprising.
Lin Chunhong was worried. He was determined to show his strength, but because the Ming Dynasty did not give him a chance to give it a try.
He wanted to build a war-going army, but he had no reputation to let him go. The elite soldiers of five or six hundred people are still under the banner of Zhijiang County archers. As for building weapons, it is even more invisible. He could only buy some bad things secretly from the Qianhusou, Datian.
He wanted to govern one party, but he was not a Jinshi and was always rejected by officials such as Bao Zhedong. Although he is currently serving as a Dianshi, it can be imagined that there is no room for promotion in the future.
Lin Chunhong couldn't help feeling angry and thought to himself: "Do you have to force me to follow Li Zicheng's path?"
Immediately, Lin Chunhong shook his head: It is impossible to follow Li Zicheng's path at this time.
Lin Chunhong was very sober. Once he raised the anti-flagration, it was hard to say that his loyal subordinates would follow him one way to the dark. The Ming Dynasty was established for more than 200 years, and unless he could not survive, most of his people would not take the initiative to rebel.
Furthermore, the main reason for the smooth flow of business is that it is rooted in the Ming system. The huge Ming Empire has provided a huge consumer market for the entire group. Once the anti-flagship is erected, all businesses will immediately fall into trouble.
Lin Chunhong sighed and thought to himself, "Is Emperor Taizu right? "Build high walls, accumulate grain, and slowly become king." I should strengthen my strength step by step. With enough strength, whether it is to support the Ming Dynasty or rebel, it is not in my own thoughts?
After careful consideration, Lin Chunhong formulated a three-step plan for himself: the first step was to take advantage of the opportunity of archers entering the countryside to control a county in Zhijiang and provide experience for mastering local governments; the second step, Lin Chunhong focused his attention on the Datian Qianhu Office, hoping to provide an excuse for himself to expand his army and prepare for war and build armies by completely controlling the Datian Qianhu Office; the third step, Lin Chunhong was preparing to use various reasons to lead troops everywhere to fight, expand his territory, and build a war-going army.
With the plan, Lin Chunhong threw his worries aside, and a sneer appeared on the corner of his mouth: "I am fighting Bao Zhedong in Zhijiangxian, fighting with others, and having endless fun! I have no enemies for a day, and I feel uncomfortable all over!"
Little Daizi stood beside Lin Chunhong. Seeing Lin Chunhong was anxious, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes excited, and finally smiled. He was afraid that Lin Chunhong would be obsessed with it. He hurriedly held a report and said, "Sir, Ni Xinze of Dongjiawan, Cheng Shu wrote a report, please read it!"
"Oh? I got a report so soon? These two guys are pretty intentional, come and take it to me!"
At the beginning of the year, Lin Chunhong carefully selected ten representative villages and sent twenty people to settle in separately, and asked everyone to write their own experiences and experiences into reports and send them to him for personal reading. Of course, Lin Chunhong couldn't wait, after all, these twenty people were the key to his first step in planning.
Lin Chunhong took the report and was fascinated all of a sudden, and even forgot to eat:
...
Dongjiawan Village is located on the edge of the Agate River. Here, the Agate River turns a corner and forms a pool, so it is called Dongjiawan Village. Dongjiawan has about 1,200 acres of arable land, and a small amount of hillsides and bamboo forests, which are convenient to irrigate and fertile land. Each piece of land can harvest two seasons of rice a year. In order to maintain the soil abilities, rapeseed is also mixed, so the yield per mu of land here is relatively high, and it can produce about five stones of millet a year. According to the old people in the village, it is mainly due to the Chameng rice promoted in the Song Dynasty. However, the land here is very fragmented and has been artificially divided into many small pieces. For example, Dong Zikai's family in Dong Village has 21 acres of paddy fields, which are located in twelve different places. It is really a bit doubtful whether Dong Zikai can remember where his family's fields are.
There are no particularly large landlords in Dongjiawan. Dong Chentai owns the most land, and only more than 200 acres. Dong Chentai is the clan leader of Dongjiawan, responsible for handling some big and small affairs in the village, and has a high prestige. There are very few pure tenants in Dongjiawan. According to Dong Chentai, when the ancestors of Dong family Dong Wenlong and Dong Wenbi moved here, they formulated a system of study and sacrifice. When the Dong clan members were in trouble, the clans paid to buy the land they had in their hands, act as a teaching and sacrifice field, and provide sacrifices and private schools in the clan. If this family survived the difficult period and wanted to redeem the land, they would redeem it at the sale price. Over the past few hundred years, this system has been well implemented, so the villagers here generally live and work in peace and contentment.
However, there was also a contradiction between the large population and the small land in Dongjiawan. Therefore, life in Dongjiawan is relatively relaxed. After working, villagers like to chat under the big locust tree at the entrance of the village. Some young people even gamble, but the amount of bets is very small, mainly for spending time.
There are 323 families in Dongjiawan, 672 people in Dingkou, with a total population of 1,580 people. Interestingly, the men in Dongjiawan are basically all surnamed Dong, and their wives are basically surnamed Teng. The reason is that Dongjiawan and Tengjiahe live next to each other, and the women in Dongjiahe are basically married to Tengjiahe, and the women in Tengjiahe are basically married to Dongjiawan. These two surnames are basically related and have a relatively harmonious relationship, and even the ancestral hall is next to each other.
After Cheng Shu and I arrived in Dongjiawan, the first step was to build shops. When building shops, although we did not lack money, wood and stone, we lacked manpower. Therefore, we directly recruited villagers in Dongjiawan to help us build them. In addition to serving meals, we also paid wages. Many villagers were attracted by us. We worked and chatted with the villagers to let them slowly accept us. After the shop was built, at the suggestion of the patriarch Dong Chentai, we mainly sold some iron farm tools, salt, sugar, wood, lime and other daily necessities. The villagers felt that it was much more convenient than before, and they also liked to gather in shops to chat and fight cards. In view of this, Cheng Shu and I discussed building two houses specifically for the villagers to fight cards and provide free tea.
The patriarch Dong Chentai often goes to shops. Seeing that the road is difficult to walk, he mobilizes villagers to build a road and go directly to the shop door. We provide lime for free, so the road is not muddy even when it rains.
In addition to selling things, we also purchase some things. However, there are not many things available for purchase at present. The villagers here are basically self-sufficient and rarely communicate with other places. At present, the shops are operating normally, but they are still in a state of losing money. Apart from building houses and paying wages, they lost 32 taels of silver in the first two months. But Cheng Shu and I were not worried. Gradually, I think the shops will make a profit.
After the shop was built, Cheng Shu and I saw that the villagers basically accepted us and felt that the time to organize the archers was ripe. When Cheng Shu announced the decision of Lord Dianshi, more than 50 villagers came. Cheng Shu chose twelve archers in accordance with the requirements of General Manager Zhou's recruitment, and the training has begun this month. According to Cheng Shu's plan, the training time was chosen on the morning of the 2nd, 5th and 8th of each month. During the training, a group of idle people stood and watched, resulting in the training archers being a little restrained and unable to let go. However, the villagers saw them during the training, and the archers were still serious in training, afraid of being embarrassed in front of the villagers.
Cheng Shu was very cautious about determining the list of the twelve archers. He asked the clan leader with a list of more than 50 people, and asked many villagers for inquiries, directly marking out some gangsters and scoundrels to ensure that the archers did not disturb the people. After the archers were formed, they insisted on patroling every night, on the one hand to guard against thieves, and on the other hand to patrol some possible dangers. The villagers obviously felt that they were much safer, and the clan leader Dong Chentai also personally found Cheng Shu to express their gratitude.
After all the defenses, an unexpected thing happened: the tiles on the roof of the shop were smashed by three gangsters, and the archers grabbed the three gangsters on the spot. It turned out that they were resentful that they were not included in the archers and were retaliated by the archers. Cheng Shu and I attached great importance to this matter and felt that this was an opportunity to establish the prestige of the archers.
Therefore, Cheng Shu and I determined the detailed handling plan. We asked the villagers, chose the 15 gangsters whom the villagers hated, and then found a large amount of evidence and witnesses to determine their crimes. Then, Dong Chentai summoned the villagers to conduct public trials on the fifteen gangsters. But these gangsters had no major crimes, they were just stealing, teasing good women or causing some small damage. Originally, Cheng Shu and I were going to send these 15 people to Bailizhou for three months of hard labor, but after asking Dong Chentai, Dong Chentai insisted on sinking three of them into the river and drowning them, and sending the other twelve people to Bailizhou for hard labor for life.
Cheng Shu and I were very surprised by Dong Chentai's severe punishment measures. After an indirect understanding, we found that the villagers were extremely disgusted with these fifteen people. Dong Chentai had long wanted to deal with these fifteen people, but because they were all tribe members, they could not take the face to deal with them. Now with Lord Dianshi to support him, Dong Chentai wanted to solve these gangsters who harmed the villagers once and for all. We could not ignore the requirements of the villagers and Dong Chentai, but we also felt that doing so was indeed a bit disregard for the judiciary. So we discussed with Dong Chentai to send the fifteen people to Bailizhou for two years of hard labor, and then we decided to see their performance. Dong Chentai agreed to this approach.
After arresting fifteen gangsters, the villagers were so proud. According to their statement, they did not dare to provoke them before, for fear of revenge. Now they have calculated that they will be a big harm to the village. By the way, the archers have received the full support of the villagers, and some villagers even brought eggs to Cheng Shu. The archers are also proud. Now the villagers are proud of joining the archers. Many villagers are circling around Cheng Shu, hoping that their descendants can join the archers.
However, after the reputation of the archers became higher, it also caused us trouble. There were many quarrels in the village, such as neighbors, brothers, and sisters-in-law... all trivial matters, such as the dispute between the field and the dispute between the family... Dong Chentai was dealt with before, and he had a headache. But now the villagers are accustomed to calling me and Cheng Shu, thinking that with me and Cheng Shu, we can handle the quarrels fairly. Cheng Shu and I also thought about these things carefully, and felt that the fundamental reason was that the villagers had a large population and a small land, lived too leisurely, and everyone had little work, so that they had the energy to fight for some trivial matters. To fundamentally resolve the quarrel, we had to find some opportunities to make money and let them pursue profits.
Therefore, I think the archers should be expanded, at least thirty people are needed, and the training time should also increase, which requires approval from Lord Dianshi. In addition, given that the bamboo baskets prepared by Dong Zicai in the village are very well sold in the county and Jingzhou Prefecture, we asked Dong Zicai to bring more apprentices and teach the skills of making bamboo baskets. For each apprentice, we will give an additional subsidy of one or two silver coins, and we will collect as much as the bamboo baskets prepared. Dong Zicai is also particularly happy. Now some villagers have learned to make bamboo baskets and have an additional income.
But these measures cannot fundamentally solve the problem. Recently, I heard that Bailizhou is so scarce and people are scarce. I would like to ask Lord Dianshi to inform you whether you can promote the benefits of Bailizhou in the village and guide and summon villagers to Bailizhou to make a living?
In addition, the patriarch of Tengjiahe is quite envious of the changes in Dongjiawan. He thinks that it is convenient to buy things in Dongjiawan and the village is quieter. He asked if we could build shops and organize archers in Tengjiahe. Cheng Shu and I didn’t directly answer this or not. Now we report it to Lord Dianshi and ask Lord Dianshi to decide.
In addition, the villagers of Tengjiahe also flocked to shops to buy things. When the villagers in the two villages bought things, the villagers were used to exchanging things with real objects. Cheng Shu and I were also in a difficult situation. After all, the value of the real objects is difficult to judge. If we are not careful, there will be things that are low in valuation and harm the interests of us or the villagers. Cheng Shu and I investigated the reason. It turned out that the villagers had too little silver in their hands, and the price of selling things was too low, which was far less cost-effective than physical exchange. I think that in these small batches of transactions, it is best to use copper coins. After all, it is too troublesome to divide the silver. But there were not many copper coins in the entire Ming Dynasty, and many villagers still used copper coins from the Song Dynasty. I can't find a better solution at present, so I had to try my best to prevent the villagers from suffering losses in physical exchange. This is also one of the reasons why our shops suffer losses.
The villagers now trust us very much. Many villagers told us that the Agate River separates their connection with Dongshi Town, and it would be great if they could build a bridge. In order to facilitate the villagers and to support us, Cheng Shu and I decided to donate money to build the bridge by ourselves. However, after Dong Chentai learned about this, he always blamed us and insisted on not letting us pay the money. He organized the villagers to quarry and build the bridge by himself. There is a stonemason named Dong Shengkui in Dongjiawan. It is said that the bridge repair skills are very excellent. Many bridges in Zhijiang and even Jingzhou Prefecture were organized and built by him. Please pay attention to Master Dianshi.
Cheng Shu and I believe that Dong Chentai, the patriarch of Dong Jiawan, has helped us a lot. We can quickly open up the situation in Dong Jiawan, which is inseparable from Dong Chentai's support. Moreover, there is no refugee or famine in Dong Jiawan, which is related to the family law established by the ancestors of the Dong family. The family law of the Dong family is quite strict, and the handling of fifteen gangsters confirmed this. When Dong Jiawan handles incidents that violate family law, Dong Chentai is only responsible for figuring out the facts, and the determination of whether the family law is violated is decided by three respected elderly people. If it is determined that the family law is violated, another Dong family will decide what kind of punishment to impose. When dealing with the handling, the villagers want to watch and cannot be expelled. Even Cheng Shu and I can watch or even raise objections, but we have never raised objections.
According to our observation, we found that the village's servants were quite heavy. What's ridiculous is that the data counted by Zhijiang County in Dongjiawan was still from more than 100 years ago, and it was compiled into two Lijia. But only two Lijia, so there were too many employees. According to Dong Chentai, Dongjiawan was forced to be unable to do anything at first. Many people's family background was a little weak, and their families were destroyed. The four generations of the Dong family agreed to serve the tribe together and arranged by the clan leader.
Therefore, everyone helped each other to protect the poor family. Originally, Dongjiawan had overworked and could only handle the labor service, but now the better position of labor service in the county has been occupied by some people for a long time, and Dongjiawan needs to pay silver to replace labor service. In this way, the silver paid in a year is several times the tax revenue, which makes the villagers complain. Fortunately, Dongjiawan has fertile land and can still catch some fish in the river or lake so that they will not be unable to survive.
Dongjiawan established a private school. After the children in the village paid a certain amount of Chengyi, they could study in the private school. Chengyi was not high, and according to the harvest of the school field, it was spread to each child. Therefore, since the beginning of the Hongwu Master, Dongjiawan had two Jinshi, five Juren and many scholars. This was not unrelated to the school field system. Now there are two Dong family children who are officials outside. I think that in Bailizhou, we can also establish a school field system to allow children to go to school, which is also a great virtue...
