Chapter 562: Standing on the shoulders of giants
"The light painting is not gray, it is light and thick, it is thick and light, the poem has the atmosphere of mist and clouds, and the calligraphy is also like a dragon and tiger!" Li Shimin put the brush and exclaimed a lot at the bamboo paper.
Following Li Zhan, he saw three words on bamboo paper... Jade buckle paper.
"Yukuangzi...!" Li Zhan smiled and read out the three words on the bamboo paper.
Looking at Li Zhan, Li Shimin smiled and said, "How about it... This is the best bamboo paper name I brought to you, Yukou... Do you still like it?"
"I like it very much..." Li Zhan smiled and said, "The best bamboo paper in Zhushan will be called jade buckle paper in the future. This jade buckle paper has a good texture, is smooth and flexible, has strong tension, cannot rub fur, is uniform in sheets, is white in color, is as bright as jade, is hygienic and non-toxic, has clear and transparent, is easy to dry in writing, does not fade, and is not eroded for a long time.
It is an excellent paper for calligraphy and painting.
And Your Majesty, the best thing about jade buckle paper is to print books. I can guarantee that the books printed by jade buckle paper will never be damaged for a hundred years...!"
Li Shimin smiled and looked at Wang Dali and asked, "Dali...How many jade buckle paper can be made in a year?"
"When I came back to your Majesty..., our papermaking master told me that if we could give us all the bamboos in the country, we could make 1 million kilograms of jade buckle paper a year."
"1 million kilograms of jade buckle paper!" In an instant, Li Shimin smiled: "That's simply great!"
Li Zhan looked at Li Shimin who was laughing happily and said, "Your Majesty, more importantly, we can suppress the price of paper, so that the price of making books will be reduced.
Shichen also has a movable type printing technique, which can greatly save the cost of printing books."
"Zhan'er... don't hide it anymore. You are my eldest son and the eldest prince of the Tang Dynasty. You can't even tell Dali...!" Li Shimin smiled.
"Ah...!" Wang Dali looked at Li Zhan in shock, and then quickly knelt down to Li Zhan and said, "Wang Dali pays homage to His Highness."
Li Zhan quickly helped Wang Dali and said, "Uncle Dali... It's not that Li Zhan hides you, but at that time, I, Li Zhan, had not recognized my father yet, so I'm sorry."
"Dali doesn't dare, Dali can only be happy. Then there is a blame. If Dali goes back and tells Brother Tang, I think Brother Tang will be very happy." Wang Dali said hurriedly.
Li Zhan said: "I can only tell the owner of Tang Zhuang that I will hide my identity for a while!"
"Zhan'er...!" Li Shimin said: "Can you get the movable type printing technique you mentioned quickly? I'm afraid you haven't had much time in Chang'an, and Gaochang is ready to move. That Gaochang King will not be able to fight."
When he heard this, Wang Dali shouted: "Your Majesty, Xuanjia Army is ready at all times!"
"Okay..." Wang Dali's words really made Li Shimin very happy.
Li Zhan on the side also smiled and said, "Father, the Xuanjia Army is worthy of being the most powerful army in the Tang Dynasty. However, please rest assured that the Tiger Ben Army and the Tiger Army of the Tang Dynasty will not disappoint the Emperor. This battle in Gaochang will definitely win."
"Zhan'er, when you win the great victory of Gaochang, it is time for me to announce your identity to the world." Li Shimin was very happy.
"Thank you, Father..." Li Zhan bowed.
Then I heard Li Shimin say, "Zhan'er... the movable type printing technique should be fast."
Li Zhan smiled and said, "Please rest assured, within ten days, but I will use it as a prisoner for my use."
"From now on, I will serve you only, and my decree will be sent immediately." Li Shimin did not hesitate.
Li Zhan laughed and said, "Thank you, Father...!"
....................................................
It was about afternoon, and the prince Li Chengqian was staying in prison. Wang Dali was invited by Li Zhan to play at Qingfeng Tower. He came from thousands of miles away and should have a good time.
As for Li Zhan, we must start studying movable type printing.
First of all, it is the Zhenguan period. You should know that printing techniques were really not good during the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty. Now the Tang Dynasty has not even invented woodblock printing. It will not appear until the middle and late Tang Dynasty.
Some people may ask, how can there be books in the Tang Dynasty now?
Book servant...I don't know if you have heard of it. As the name suggests, the so-called book servant is the person who was responsible for copying books at that time. In modern terms, he was a scribe or typist.
Such a profession was born very early in ancient times, and its status was not high, and its name changed many times.
At the earliest, it was called "bookman", "bookman", "bookman", and finally it was called "book servant". However, no matter how the name changed, its identity and work content had not changed: copying books.
Copy the treasured classics one by one, bind them into books, and spread them to the world, so that more and more people who need them can read them. Today we can understand the history of our ancestors thousands of years ago and inherit the great Chinese civilization. They are the unknown heroes behind them.
This work is very hard. Every day, I just lean on the case, copying books in a stroke, and must not be sloppy. Each stroke must be written squarely, with a large workload and high work intensity. It is indeed not a job that ordinary people can do. They must write well and be patient.
If you copy a wrong word, the whole book will be ruined.
More importantly, those who did this kind of work were indeed not ordinary people. How many people were willing to make a living by this job? At least most noble children and Confucian students were disdainful of doing it.
Most of the people who are willing to make a living by relying on this are not capable, have no education, or are well-versed in writing. They have good culture but bad writing. Therefore, in ancient times, there were basically several types of people who did this work: one was poor scholars, the other was the children of the destitute nobles, and even prisoners who served in crime.
Since the Han Dynasty, I have been experiencing the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, and Song dynasties... With the invention and maturity of movable type printing in the Northern Song Dynasty in the 11th century, I no longer need to copy books.
Although the formation of this woodblock printing industry in the middle and late Tang Dynasty... it was a full plate at a moment. The woodblock printing plates generally used wood with fine and solid textures, such as jujube wood, pear wood, etc.
Then saw the wood into pieces of wooden boards, write the characters to be printed on thin paper, paste them on the wooden board, and then carve them into positive text with a knife according to the strokes of each character, so that the strokes of each character protrude on the board. After the wooden board is carved, you can print the book.
When printing a book, dip a brush with ink and brush it on the carved board. Then, cover it with white paper on the board, and gently brush it on the back of the paper. Take the paper off, and the page of the book will be printed. After printing one page after another, it will be bound into a book, and the book will be printed successfully.
It was really wasteful and troublesome, so during the Tang Dynasty, printed materials were mainly concentrated in some metropolitan areas and developed commercial centers. However, the printed materials in these places were mainly about Buddhist scriptures, almanacs, etc., and the printed works were extremely limited, which had little effect on the cultural promotion of the entire society at that time.
movable type printing technology...Bi Sheng's method is as follows: use clay to make blanks with the same specifications, engrave the reverse single characters on one end, and the height of the protrusion of the characters is like the thickness of the edge of the copper coin, and it is burned hard with fire to become a single clay movable type.
In order to meet the needs of typesetting, there are generally several or even dozens of commonly used characters for repetition in the same version. If you encounter uncommonly used characters, you can make them as you like.
To facilitate the selection of characters, place the clay movable characters in a wooden grid according to rhyme and paste them with paper marks.
When typing, use a framed iron plate as the bottom support, apply a layer of medicine made of rosin, wax and paper ash on it, and then select the required clay movable type and place it into the frame one by one.
After a full frame, it becomes a plate. Then bake it over fire. When the potion melts slightly, use a flat plate to flatten the literally. After the potion cools and solidifies, it becomes a pattern. When printing, just brush ink on the pattern, cover it with paper, and add a certain amount of pressure.
In order to be able to print continuously, two iron plates are used, one sheet is brushed, the other sheet is arranged in type, and the two sheets are used alternately.
After printing, use a torch to make the potion melt, gently shake it with your hands, and the movable type can fall off the iron plate, and then press the rhyme and put it back into the original wooden grid for use next time.
Bi Sheng also tested the printing of wood movable type. Bi Sheng did not use it because of the uneven texture of the wood, the difficulty of engraving, the deformation of the wood movable type after being dipped in water, and the difficulty of being separated from the agent when it is stuck together.
However, Li Zhan is a person standing on the shoulders of a giant. This wooden movable type is actually the simplest and most cost-effective. The wooden movable type was not invented by Bi Sheng. The man who created the wooden movable type is called Wang Zhen.
A native of Dongping, Shandong, was an agronomist who served as a county magistrate. He left behind a book that summarized the experience of ancient agricultural production - "Book of Agriculture".
Wang Zhen’s methods of engraving, editing, selecting, sorting, printing and other methods of wood movable characters are attached to this book.
He hired craftsmen to carve more than 30,000 wooden movable type in Jingde, Anhui. In the second year of Dade of Chengzong of Yuan Dynasty, he tried to print more than 60,000 characters of "Jingde County Chronicles" in less than a month and printed 100 pieces of "Jingde County Chronicles" in less than a month. This is the first wooden movable type printed copy with records.
Another contribution of Wang Zhen to printing technology was the invention of the rotary wheel type plate. A large roulette is made of light wood, with a diameter of about seven feet and a shaft three feet high. The roulette is installed on the shaft and can rotate freely.
According to the classification method of ancient rhyme books, he puts the wooden movable characters into grids on the plate. He made two such large roulettes. The typist sat between the two roulettes and turned the roulette to find the characters. This is what Wang Zhen said, "use the characters to be used, and use the characters to be selected according to the rhyme."
This not only improves the efficiency of typing, but also reduces the physical labor of typing workers. It is an innovation in typing technology.
Subsequently, in the Ming and Qing dynasties, wood movable characters were widely popular. In the ancestral halls of various provinces, wood movable characters were often used to print genealogy and genealogy. After the 11th year of Chongzhen (1638), the imperial court "Dibao" issued by the capital also used wood movable characters to print.
Li Zhan directly copied a copy of Wang Zhen's "Mobile Type" from the encyclopedia and threw it to the general manager. The master craftsman looked at it and bowed and said, "Ten days...!"
Li Zhan smiled happily.
