Chapter 20 Patrol

Annick continued to do simple and boring paperwork for the next few days.

Until Saturday, today is the day of patrol. Annick woke up early, arranged his police uniform, put it on, and put the revolver close to his holster.

When he rushed to the police station, Old Betsy and Brownie were already waiting for him.

"Today we are responsible for patrolling. We will go to the port in the morning and the surrounding streets in the afternoon. Bring your guns, although you generally won't need them."

Old Betsy lit a cigarette and said.

"How can we get there if we take Mr. Betsy with us?"

"There is a shared carriage in the police station. You and Brownie can learn how to drive by the way. In the future, if you encounter special situations, you will have to drive alone to deal with them."

In addition to wearing a police uniform today, Brownie also carried a dark wooden baton around his waist.

He picked a white local horse from the stables in the police station and pulled out a black carriage with a sword and saber badge. Annick sat on the driving board of the carriage and watched how Brownie drove.

"Horses are very smart. Don't pull the reins too tightly. When turning left and right, just gently pull the reins left and right." Brownie said.

The carriage was walking steadily on the road, and the morning fog had not yet dissipated. The road was full of workers going to work. When they saw the police carriage coming, they basically dispersed and gave way, and their cursing stopped temporarily.

.

A child nearby who was under school age was playing in the street wearing white and worn clothes. He watched the three people walking by with curiosity and fear.

The fishy smell of seafood, the smoke of burning coal and charcoal, and the smell of workers' sweat came from the dock.

Next to the pier, there are constantly small steamers with wooden hulls that spray steam to transport various goods. Wooden cranes carry large packages from the steamers to and from the ships. There are also porters on the pier constantly transporting various goods.

"Brownie, go park the car and I'll take Annick for a spin," Old Betsy said.

The wharf is very large. In addition to various transportation parts, there are also various warehouses and seafood markets. There are many carriages and people.

"Be careful, there are all kinds of lawless thieves here at most. Although no one dares to touch our place, no one knows what they will do if they are so poor. Captain Parker once had his pocket watch stolen by a little thief.

"Unfortunately, the thief didn't expect that the chain of the pocket watch was directly connected to Captain Parker's breast pocket."

"The thief was caught?" Annick asked.

"No, a thirteen-year-old kid had been hungry for three days, but the captain treated him to a meal and found him a job as a cook in a hotel. He must have run away from an orphanage. There are several small-scale businesses at the pier and seafood market.

The illegal gang π is engaged in the illegal business of smuggling and smuggling."

"Don't we care?"

"The tax bureau is responsible for smuggling. As for smuggling, how do you think places with high manual labor in mines and steel mills can recruit enough workers? Although the conservatives are shouting to drive away illegal immigrants, we Whigs

The factories behind the party members need these high-quality black workers from the southern continent. Let’s go to the market and have a cup of coffee.”

Various caught aquatic products are displayed in the seafood market. The floor is slippery, and housewives carrying vegetable baskets are bargaining fiercely with the vendors.

"Chief Betsy this morning, is the new police chief next to you? You are a police chief at such a young age. Please pay more attention to your voice in the future." Stall owners kept saying hello to the two of them.

"Hello, I'm Annick, the new clerk in the branch." Annick kept taking off his hat in greeting.

There is a small cafe next to the market. Since it is a cafe mainly for dock workers and vendors, it always looks greasy.

Annick opened the door and found that Brownie was already there. Coffee here is very cheap, and you can order a large pot for 3 pence. Annick took the initiative to order a pot, and it tasted like ash.

"It's already ten o'clock, our secret agent should be arriving." Old Betsy looked at her watch and said.

"Ding dong", the door was pushed open, and a short-haired, thin boy in his early ten years walked in. Old Betsy waved to him, and the boy walked towards the three of them.

"Good morning, Mr. Betsy, you are on patrol today." The boy stood at the table.

"Sit over here, I'm Annick, the new clerk." Annick pointed to the bench next to him.

"Hello, sir, I'm Cole. I'll just stand here. What do you want to ask today?" The boy refused Annick's kindness.

"The Black Gang and the Blood Eagle Gang have been peaceful recently. Is there anything big going on at the dock?" Old Betsy said.

"Last month, after you talked to the two bosses of the Black Gang and the Blood Eagle Gang, they restrained their subordinates from conflicting behavior. Recently, a group of people wearing black clothes came to the dock. They usually patrol around the warehouse."

"I understand. You usually stay away from the group of men in black when collecting information. Is there anything else?"

"A lot of stray dogs have disappeared recently."

"This is not our concern. Take good care of your sister. If you get sick, remember to find the branch. You know the address."

After speaking, Old Betsy took out five pennies from his pocket and placed them on the table.

"Thank you for taking care of me. If there is any new news, I will go to the branch to notify you."

After Cole finished speaking, he bowed to Old Betsy and then swept the coins on the table into his coat pocket.

When Cole left Annick and wanted to speak, Old Betsy said directly:

"It's not all charity. Ordinary gang members and workers won't say anything when they see us, and underage children are nothing to be wary of. We can drink coffee here leisurely because of their help. By the way, usually two people

When patrolling, the one with the higher salary is responsible for paying the intelligence fee, and the one with the lower salary is responsible for paying for the coffee. Remember to pay when you come with other patrol officers in the future. The two brothers and sisters are counting on these five pennies."

We had lunch in the police canteen at noon, and in the afternoon Annick drove the carriage with common sense, cautiously at first.

The carriage was moving at a slow speed, but Brownie couldn't see it and pushed himself to the side and started driving himself.

"I think if we let you do the driving, we won't be able to complete the patrol this afternoon, so we'd better let the professionals do it first."

There are relatively few people in the neighborhoods near the dock, and most workers still go to work on Saturdays.

When I came to Wallen Street near my home, the relatively wealthy people rented here, and there were more pedestrians on the road.

"Brother, when are you coming back for dinner?" At the corner of Wallen Street, I met sister Irena who had just returned from shopping for groceries.

"I'll be back after get off work."

"It's too late. Just heat it up yourself."

"You live on Warren Street, and you have two younger sisters? Sure enough, the person who Director Ron wrote to personally is from a good family," Old Betsey joked.

"It's just a farmer's family, and the house was rented through the introduction of the previous landlord. Director Ron just happened to know my mentor." Annick smiled awkwardly.
