Chapter 6 Libraries
The National University of Eggersberg is built in the Ryde district in the south of Eggsburg city. Together with the Keiranger Military Academy and the King's College of Art next to it, it forms the core of the Ryde district.
This is probably the prototype of later university towns. Since there are no student dormitories, most apartments around the school are rented to students, and the closer they are to the school, the more expensive they are.
Annick's family is not wealthy, so he lives in South Cross Street, which is far away from the school and close to the Gonia District to the east, which relies on ports and commerce.
Back in the apartment, I took out my wallet and checked that the paper student ID card on the side of the wallet was still there. It was a brown-red paper shell about half the size of a palm. Inside, there was student information specific to the department and class, and there was also a card.
Black and white personal photo.
After changing the cotton slippers on his feet into wide-toe shoes, Annick picked up a black bowler hat and hung the pocket watch under the left pocket of his shirt before walking out the door.
As the capital city, there is a bus and horse-drawn carriage system to provide transportation needs for the general public. Like bus lines on the earth, they have a starting station and a terminal station, and road signs are set up at a certain distance in the middle.
After waiting on South Cross Street for more than ten minutes, the bus bound for the university slowly came over.
Two horses pull a long carriage painted orange. The bus carriage has one compartment but can be used as a double decker. The bottom compartment with glass windows is usually for the elderly or women holding children.
Gentlemen usually walk through the spiral staircase at the rear of the car to the outdoor seats on the roof. They are responsible for buying tickets according to the distance, starting at 1 penny.
"Good morning, sir, where are you going?" The conductor is a young man in his early twenties, with short brown hair and freckles, wearing a red uniform, with a suitcase hanging open on his chest, containing change and freckles.
White ticket.
"Good morning, I'm getting off at the University of Eggsburg." Annick took out a copper penny and handed it to the conductor. The conductor tore off a white ticket and gave it to Annick.
After passing through the carriage and climbing onto the roof, there were not many people on the bus on a holiday morning. Annick found a seat in the middle row and sat on the edge to look at the scenery on the side of the road.
Due to limitations in construction technology, most of the buildings on the roadside are made of bricks and tiles, with wooden windows.
As the sun rises, various mobile vendors drive carriages or push carts from outside the city or from the Gonia District in the east to sell various small commodities and food.
On the street, you can still see bards playing for a living holding a short harp similar to a guitar, surrounded by a group of children wearing short shirts dancing together. Occasionally, a noble lady will pass by and tip a few copper pennies, which attracts a lot of attention.
A burst of thanks.
About half an hour later, the carriage arrived at Eggsburg University Station. As the largest comprehensive school in the Kelanger area, Eggsburg University is quite impressive, even though Annick is used to seeing all kinds of wonders built with steel and concrete in the 21st century.
I also admire that having money can create beauty.
After passing through the white marble arch, a masonry building with a small spire and numerous windows stands on the central axis of the university's building complex.
The school library is this building. After climbing more than a dozen stairs, Annick walked into the main entrance of the library. After showing his student ID to the gatekeeper, he was allowed to enter the book collection area.
The library is divided into upper and lower floors according to literature and history and science and technology. Annick searched towards the history area. He took a thick general history of the mainland and returned to the reading area. He opened the book and started reading.
The first part of the book is full of creation myths. It seems that modern science has not been established yet and everyone likes to leave unexplainable things to ghosts and gods. Annick complained in his heart and started reading the book in front of him.
The universe was born in a chaos without time and space. After an unknown period of time, the first light of the universe was born. Under the illumination of this light, eight righteous gods and numerous evil gods were born.
The war between the good gods and the evil gods broke out for hundreds of millions of years. The collision of divine power made the chaos become orderly, and the light part of the light rose to form the sky and many stars.
The heavy part of darkness descends to form the earth. Between heaven and earth are the four elements of water, fire, air, and earth that make up all things in the world. The righteous god gave the first human beings wisdom, courage, perseverance and other beautiful qualities. Some people were also bewitched by the evil god and developed greed.
, tyranny, evil, etc.
Under the guidance of gods, humans defeated many races such as giants, elves, and dwarves and became the masters of the planet.
It seems that the early history of this world without written records is regarded as history by myths. After human beings had early civilization, they became afraid of birth, old age, illness and death. Some smart people tried to explain these phenomena, and religion was born.
I don’t know if there are really gods in this world. If there are gods, can I send myself back to the modern earth? Alas. Annick sighed in his heart.
This planet is divided into the Old World and the New World. The Old World is two connected continents. The east and west continents are separated by a continuous mountain range. To the south of the mountain range is a thousand-mile desert. Exchanges between the east and west continents can only be accomplished by traveling merchants.
The political system has basically completed feudal centralization, and some small countries have already adopted republican systems. With the advancement of navigation technology, the Western Continent discovered a new continent about thirty years ago in order to explore the sea routes of the Eastern Continent.
The New World is divided into two parts, north and south. The northern part is dominated by brown and red indigenous tribes. More than 20 years ago, the powerful countries of the Western Continent began to colonize the northern continent. The black people in the south have established an early slave kingdom.
The mainland republics established multiple trade routes.
The rest focuses on introducing the various dynasties and monarchs in the Western Continent, from the establishment of the earliest human empire, the Frank Empire, to its split, and then on the achievements of the great monarchs of various countries, which is not very nutritious.
Next is an archeology book. Annick imagines that archeology as a scientific discipline should abandon many mythological elements.
Sure enough, the archeology book was different. Annick quickly turned to where the eras are divided.
Era classification: Different schools of thought have different classifications of ancient history, but basically there are four eras: gold, silver, bronze and black iron.
Golden Age: The period when human civilization was first established, about 11,000 to 1,000 years ago. Some schools of thought believe that there were many other human-like civilizations at the same time, and the existing ancient ruins and fossils can barely support this legend.
It is said in various churches that the gods did not walk in the world. It originated from the establishment of writing and calendar and ended with the beginning of the war of the gods.
Supplement 1: Some radical scholars believe that the Golden Age was actually the era when the belief in the gods was established. Archaeological discoveries have found that the number of gods and statues is far less than today.
Supplement 2: The mysterious society Silver Morning Star claims that there was only one omnipotent god in the Golden Age, and that the existing gods only differentiated after his death. This view is questionable, but many tribal relics in the Golden Age do believe in the same god.
When Annick saw this, he realized that he, a fellow European and American, should be the legendary Almighty Lord. Unfortunately, not only was he probably no longer around, but his idea of a divine stick was basically labeled as a heresy like a mysterious association.
He rubbed his eyes and continued to look down.
The Silver Age: From 10,000 to 5,000 years ago, it is the era with the fewest existing ruins. In mythology, the eight gods defeated the four evil gods. It originated from the beginning of the War of the Gods and ended with the establishment of the Frankish Empire.
Note 1: Judging from existing archaeological discoveries, the worship of the four evil gods preceded the eight righteous gods.
Note 2: The sacrifices and records of the four evil gods were completely incomplete about 7,000 years ago.
Note 3: Between 7000 and 5000 years ago, humanoid remains appeared in large numbers, but the remains disappeared in large numbers. It is suspected that a large-scale war between humans and humans occurred in the Silver Age.
It seems that the Silver Age is full of mystery. If he wants to go home, he must understand what happened in the Silver Age. Annick is like playing Russian dolls, he has solved a little mystery, and more mysteries are waiting for him.
The Bronze Age: 5,000 years ago to more than 1,800 years ago, it began with the establishment of the Frankish Empire, went through multiple dynasties, and finally ended with the end of the Charlemagne dynasty.
Note 1: An era when religious power was greater than royal power.
Note 2: The era when the gods leave the world according to the church.
The Black Iron Age: It began with the division of the Frank Empire caused by the extinction of the Charlemagne dynasty. The division of the empire and the struggle of the church led to years of war.
After years of war, all parties reached a compromise. The territories of the countries in the Western Continent were also determined. Science and technology progressed, and modern countries began to be established.
Note 1: With the establishment of science, more and more people do not believe in the existence of elves, werewolves and other humanoid races.
Note 2: After entering the Black Iron Age, the twelve existing gods have never performed miracles, and atheism became popular in the scientific community.
This was the only useful information. Annick closed the book. There was not even a trace of supernatural power or mysticism in other books.
Thinking back on how easy it is to find a way to become extraordinary in the library, then Eggsburg University might need to be renamed Eggsburg Academy of Magic.
Annick smiled, and then a more detailed and frightening thing made Annick break into a cold sweat. How did the former owner of this body get the summoning ritual of another world? It was the traditional Chinese version.
He had to become extraordinary for the sake of his own life. Annick braced himself and thought that the only person with the highest social status he could contact now was his mentor Arthur Russell.
