Chapter 39 The chief lay disciple

After the disaster in Shaolin Temple, nearly half a month later, the bandits gradually retreated around Shaolin Temple.

Several nearby villages were looted by thieves. The harm caused by thieves passing through the border was far greater than that of locusts. Not only were the food moved out, but the houses were burned, and many villagers also died under the thieves' butcher's knife.

At present, the people from several nearby villages gathered in Shaolin Temple to take refuge.

Although the Buddhist Pudu Abbot Pusheng had no ability, he was a truly compassionate monk. For the people who were in trouble and lost their homeland, he arranged for monks to be sheltered, and ordered monks to provide food and clothing, take good care of them, and those who were sick and injured were given medicine.

However, when there are too many people in Shaolin Temple, I feel a little crowded. Although the monks are tired, everyone is finally glad that Shaolin Temple is still there and at least one bite of food is still there.

When Abbot Pusheng saw this scene, he couldn't help but feel compassionate and compassionate, but he was glad that Shaolin Temple had survived.

Abbot Pusheng and several elders were still discussing matters at the Abbot's Monastery, discussing the matter of spring plowing after the thief next year.

In fact, the bandits have been plundering in Chongyang County for nearly half a month. After the imperial court sent troops to suppress the bandits once, they hurried away. There were no troops stationed. There were still many bandits near Shaoshishan in Chongyang County.

In this way, next year's spring plowing has become a big problem. How to successfully cultivate spring plowing and how to preserve the pure land of Shaoshishan under the harassment of this thief has become a problem for Pusheng and several elders.

After this difficulty, the elders also knew how to adapt and no longer thought that the things that the monks practiced were delaying their practice. Nowhere could they come from their lives to practice, and without the ability to protect the temple, how could they defend Buddhism and save all sentient beings?

"Our temple selects hundreds of young and strong monks to practice sticks to resist the invasion of refugees."

The words of Pusheng were immediately approved by the elders.

An elder said, "I think Tan Zong is good, so he can teach his disciples a stick. Of course, the integration of Zen and martial arts you mentioned before is also essential."

Pusheng nodded and said, "What my senior brother said is very much. The unity of Zen and martial arts is also to let the disciples practice sticks and not forget their compassion."

Seeing Pusheng say this, all the monks nodded and said yes.

"But," Pusheng frowned, "but if you resist the thief and fight on the battlefield, there must be a dispatcher. We lack such talents now. That night, when the thief went up the mountain, the monks in this temple scattered and there was no one to command and dispatch. It was my junior brother's dereliction of duty, and I really don't have the ability to command the commander!"

After hearing what Pusheng said, the monks expressed comfort. Suddenly, a monk said, "Abbot, if there is no such talent in this temple, it is better to recruit from outside. What do you think?"

Pusheng's eyes lit up and he smiled and said, "Junior brother, is there a good candidate?"

"Yes, this person is actually the abbot's senior brother, and he has already known the choice in his heart." The monk said with a smile.

Pusheng shook his head and said, "Actually, I have also tested this person's voice, but he has politely refused. I think this person is young, but he has a beautiful heart and ambition. I think it is not a thing in the pool."

The monk next to him said, "Junior brother, whether he has the ambition or not, we finally persuade him. This person has made great contributions to this temple. If he can stay and take responsibility, it would be the best."

"That's right, it's right." Pusheng nodded, but showed a look of meditation.

Not long after, Li Chongjiu heard that it was the abbot who summoned him and arrived at the main hall of the temple.

Li Chongjiu thought it was Pusheng who invited him to summon him, but he did not expect that this time it would be such a big battle. Not only Pusheng, the old monks of his age, came out together, and there were seven or eight monks sitting in front of him.

Li Chongjiu knew a little at the moment, but he was very respectful and polite. After celebrating the monks with one hand, he sat down on the mattress.

Seeing that Li Chongjiu was so polite, the monks were all very impressed by him.

After sitting down, Pusheng first greeted Li Chongjiu, first asked Li Chongjiu if he had any habits in the temple in the past half month, and finally got to the point.

Pusheng said, "Mr. Li, I think you have a lot of wisdom towards Buddha. How about taking precepts and becoming a monk?"

As expected, Li Chongjiu had really come, and although he had expected it, he naturally ignored his bald head and planned to become a monk.

At that moment, Li Chongjiu said, "Thank you for your kindness, but I am the only son in the family. My father has given me strict orders to marry and have children within several years, so I am afraid I will not be able to get a wife and have children."

After hearing Li Chongjiu's rejection, Pusheng and others were naturally disappointed.

However, there are three unfilial things at this time, and without a descendant is the greatest. Li Chongjiu is the only son in the family and has not yet married a wife. If he is allowed to become a monk, it is really unreasonable.

However, there were always several monks who were still unwilling to give up and immediately had a dispute with Li Chongjiu, but Li Chongjiu was very determined. The monks were unwilling to let Li Chongjiu go down the mountain, but unfortunately Li Chongjiu was unwilling to be a monk. This was a dilemma.

At this moment, Pusheng knew how to adapt. He said, "So, Mr. Li is willing to stay in my Shaoshi Mountain for a while, but he is unwilling to take the precepts and become a monk."

Li Chongjiu nodded immediately and said, "Master Abbot, I also have the heart to be close to Buddhism, but my father's destiny is as good as the heaven."

Pusheng nodded and said, "Then, the old monk has a compromise."

"Please tell me the abbot." Li Chongjiu said.

Abbot Pusheng smiled and said, "Mr. Li can still be my disciple of Shaolin Temple, but you don't have to take the ten precepts of novice monks, and you don't have to take the precepts of monks in the future. You can also keep your hair. You only need to take the five precepts of lay people (note 1)."

An old monk with white eyebrows frowned and said, "My junior abbot, you don't take the novice precepts or have the full precepts, that is, you are not considered a monk. How could I say that my disciples at home in Shaolin Temple?"

Pusheng smiled and said, "Why did the Buddha save sentient beings? As long as you have the idea of becoming a monk at home, you can be considered a good disciple of my Buddhism. What do you think of it?"

The monks wanted to stay with Li Chongjiu, but they didn't care about the saying of becoming a monk at home, and they nodded and said yes.

When Pu Sheng saw that everyone was not opposed, he smiled and looked at Li Chongjiu and said, "What do you think Mr. Li thinks? Are you willing to become a disciple of my Shaolin Temple?"

A lay disciple, also known as the lay disciple, did not expect that he was the first great disciple in history.

In an instant, Li Chongjiu felt like time and space were intertwined. In an instant, he seemed to see Wu Song, Yue Wumu, Zhang Sanfeng, Fang Shiyu, and a founding general waving to him.

Li Chongjiu was a bit incredible at this moment. Is this history changing himself or himself changing history?

After hearing Pusheng ask again, Li Chongjiu said immediately: "Thank you, Master Abbot."

After hearing what Li Chongjiu said, all the monks nodded with satisfaction.

At that moment, Pusheng personally recited the Five Precepts with Li Chongjiu.

This is also a considerable honor. Although he is not a formal Buddhist disciple, Li Chongjiu does not need to summon the monks, nor does he need to take precepts to monks and acharyas, nor does he need to be ordained or obtained a Dharma name.

However, it was a matter of Shaolin Temple that the abbot’s monk personally recited the Five Precepts for Li Chongjiu.

The abbot’s monk finished reciting the Five Precepts. What are the five virtues, six thoughts, and ten counts, which are all based on self-consciousness.

Note 1: The five precepts are: One is not to kill, two is not to steal, three is not to commit adultery, four is not to lie, five is not to drink alcohol, also known as the Five Precepts of lay people.
