1300 Nepotism

As members of the jury of the film festival, they are not as easy as they imagined. They must keep a high concentration and watch twenty difficult art movies in just twelve days, which can be two and a half hours or three hours. There are also media interviews and social parties, and they are under high frequency and high intensity almost every day

This is just the main competition unit. If necessary, they may need to watch more.

The media often rumored that a judge fell asleep while watching the movie. This is not a slander, but a fact. But we cannot blame them. The review work of the film festival is a severe test for both mental and physical strength. In addition, some art films are indeed slow and easy for people to fall asleep. The judges are all mortals after all.

Obviously, Ang Lee was making fun of Lan Li’s words, complaining, or complaining.

But Lan Li didn't care at all, her smile bloomed happily, and her mood rose, "How can you be sure that I was refreshed because I enjoyed the film festival too much?"

"Quote. Everyone knows that Renly Hall is very eloquent, and I refuse to argue with you." Ang Lee said seriously, but his eyes were filled with smiles, as if he saw an elder close to his younger generation.

At this year's Oscars, Lan Li and Ang Lee met once.

The brief conversation left a deep impression. The interpretation of Eastern culture in the movie "The Fantasy Drift of the Young Pi", about reincarnation, about fate, philosophy, and Lan Li's views and insights really made Ang Lee's eyes shine.

Although this work is highly praised in Hollywood, few Western film critics can truly understand the profoundness and complexity of Eastern culture. Western filmmakers often use curiosity perspectives to describe an Eastern country in their impression, but they are extremely far away from the real Eastern culture.

As a "British", Lan Li's interpretation and understanding became more and more valuable. That conversation really left a deep impression on Ang Lee.

"How about it, have you seen any works worth discussing this time?" Ang Lee asked with a smile, and actually started to take the exam and continued his elders' attitude.

"'Adele's Life'." Lan Li's answer was not hesitant, and it became simple and clear. Then he saw Ang Lee's mouth gently raised, raised his right hand, and gently tapped Lan Li twice, helpless, funny and blamed. Lan Li didn't make any arguments, spreading his hands open with a calm look on his face, "I knew you would like it."

If Ang Lee's film strokes present a Western world in the eyes of Orientals, then "Adele's Life" presents a Western world in the eyes of French people, delicately capturing the difficulties and confusion of the middle class with lifelike fragments. This is exactly the style that Ang Lee loves.

So, is Lan Li's answering this way, catering to Ang Lee's preferences?

Ang Lee laughed silently and deliberately made things difficult, "Do you think I like it as an audience or as a judge?"

"Both are." Lan Li answered simply, looking at Ang Lee's expression that could not be refuted, Lan Li's head was light and a smile flashed in her eyes.

Ang Lee deliberately looked stern, "So do you think I like the 'Drunk Village Song'?"

"As the audience or as the judge?" The same sentence, Lan Li was used in turn on Ang Lee, but the effect became completely different.

Ang Lee was slightly stunned for a moment, then he savored it, but he still didn't say anything. He shook his head with a smile, "You, you." Then he changed the subject and did not talk too much about the movie, because as a judge, he still had to remain objective and avoid talking about movies as much as possible during the film festival, which is the case for anyone.

So, just click until it's time. He then changed a topic, "How about it, are you ready to start the show again?"

"Are you preparing for a new work?" Lan Li's eyes lit up slightly, and she asked in a brisk tone, "You know, if it's a work you directed, I definitely have no problem."

Lanli is serious.

In fact, after "Pi's Fantasy Drift", Ang Lee, like many director masters, began to explore the depth and thickness of the film's story given by the lens language. Therefore, he used 3D technology and 120-frame new technology to shoot "Billy Lynn's midfield battle".

According to experiments, the visual residence time of human eyes is about 0:1 second, so as long as the screen switching speed is greater than twelve frames per second, the human eyes will connect the temporary residence image of the previous frame with the next frame to form a continuous visual experience.

Generally speaking, movies use 24 frames, which means you can see twenty-four frames every second. This is the lowest speed that can prevent people from feeling stuck in the era of film invention. In order to save film, it has been preserved until now, and it is more of a kind of inheritance of habits.

The 120 frame rate means that 120 pictures will appear in each second, which will speed up by five times, which means that the pictures will be more delicate, richer and more specific. But at the same time, the human eye will also bear greater pressure and cannot even process enough information, resulting in fatigue and difficulty.

For directors and audiences, they can capture the performance details and inner changes of each character more clearly and accurately, and truly bring the audience into the inner world of the character. 120 frames to Ang Lee is undoubtedly a pioneering technology that further exerts his strengths to the extreme.

But unfortunately, the "Billy Lynn's midfield battle" failed. The media's reputation did not collapse, but it was far lower than expected; the box office results and the prospects for the awards season were completely silent. This also caused many movie fans to question Ang Lee's ability.

The main reasons for the failure of this work are two points.

First, Ang Lee tried to understand the impact of the Iraq War on American soldiers from his perspective, but his usual advantages became a weakness this time. His oriental values failed to hit the Americans, and the entire core value was misplaced, which also means that the 120-frame technology was not able to further amplify the resonance of expectations and enhance influence and penetration.

Second, the 120-frame technology magnifies the actor's performance to the extreme, which also means that the performance is the basis and structure that supports Ang Lee's entire creative core. However, the actor list appears in the actor list, such as Christine Stewart, Vin Diesel, Garnett Hedland. Their performances often lack facial expressions and eye depth, and the levels and details are completely insufficient. In the 120-frame technology, the shortcomings of the performance are further amplified and further affected the sublimation of the core theme.

In other words, "Billy Lynn's Midfield War" is a work with outstanding conception but misconduct, and ultimately failed to achieve the expected results.

But after the work failed, Ang Lee insisted that his idea was correct and he will continue to study the movie viewing experience brought by this technology. The next work will continue to use 120 frames to complete the shooting.

If the director was Ang Lee, even if he knew that the next work was "Billy Lynn's midfield battle", Lan Li was willing to take over and cooperate with such a talented director, it would undoubtedly be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Lan Li was willing to try boldly. Sometimes some things are not simply judged and chosen by success or failure.

Ang Lee could feel the enthusiasm in Lan Li's eyes, and he didn't have any doubts at all, but he still couldn't help but joke, "Is there no problem even the 'Hulk Hulk'?"

"Hulk Hulk", this commercial film is the biggest failure of Ang Lee's director's career. Putting aside the finished product quality of the work, it is certain that Ang Lee's style is indeed not suitable for commercial films. His delicateness and gentleness are more suitable for emotional communication and dialogue.

What's more, the Hulk is a Marvel series of works.

"...uh, can we change the topic?" Lan Li pretended to show an awkward expression and looked away guiltily, but it was precisely this "powerful" reaction that successfully made Ang Lee clapped his hands happily and laughed.

Few people know that Ang Lee has a personality that likes to joke in private, and the topic is not to be chewed. It is far from the style of his works.

"What? What are you talking about? Don't you know that it's best to keep a distance between the film festival judges and the main creative team of the main competition works to avoid nepotism?"

A voice with a strong smile came from the front. Ang Lee and Lan Li turned their heads and saw Steven Spielberg. He walked over with great strides. "If you want to get closer, you can't be in front of the reporters, and you're on the red carpet. This is not good."

Lan Li raised her eyebrows gently, "If it is to get closer, then isn't it a better choice in front of the reporter?"

Steven and Ang Lee exchanged a glance, and chuckled at the same time. In the end, Steven put his hands behind his back and put on an elder posture, "You'd better look forward to it. Tonight's movie is an excellent masterpiece, and your outstanding performance of your dedication, otherwise I would never show mercy at the jury discussion."

Lanli made a polite nod, then closed her mouth with a well-behaved look.

Without an answer, the action first, but the meaning is really obvious.

The two big directors couldn't help laughing again. Steven patted Lanley's arm, "Go in. Nicole specially sent me to save you. You have been staying on the red carpet for nearly an hour, but obviously, the reporters still didn't mean to let you go. But more importantly, we are all impatient to wait. When will the movie be played?"
