Chapter 33(1/2)

After staying like this for a few days, Roger finally felt better.

The "artist" also brought good news. Roger rode a pony and ran to the construction site in high spirits.

He first went up to the dam to check the water conditions. The calm water was about one meter deep and so clear that he could see the bottom of the pool. The chaos of that day could not be seen anywhere.

The water now looks clean.

Some mountain people came to fetch water. Roger asked them if they had seen water seepage, and they all said no, so he felt relieved.

Roger went to look at the stone door again. The angel statue on the stone door had no arms, the nose was a blur, and the smile with little tiger teeth was a bit like Angelica's.

Roger knew that the armless goddess represented beauty and the headless angel represented victory. He didn't know what this silly angel with missing hands and face represented?

However, in Roger's eyes, this is still a piece of art, but in the eyes of the locals, it can probably be used to scare children.

Roger heard a child crying. He turned around and saw a child whimpering as he passed by. The child looked very weak. He was holding his stomach. He probably caught a cold.

Roger turned his attention back to the stone door. He actually didn't care about the statue. He cared more about whether it fit tightly and whether it could be pulled up and put down smoothly. He asked people to try it several times, and he was very satisfied with the result.

The weather began to get cooler after the autumn rain, and the wind became stronger in the next few weeks. Feeling the chill, Roger put on more clothes.

When he was inspecting the construction site, he heard someone talking about the disease, saying that there were more people with fever in the camp.

Some people sneeze and have a runny nose but get better after a few days, while others feel weak and have no appetite and have a fever that gets worse and worse.

Roger asked people to burn more piles of firewood in the camp and asked everyone to keep warm. But he paid more attention to the progress of the dam.

The dam has reached the final stage, much faster than the original plan. Roger is very proud.

Later, it rained a few times sporadically. In addition to adding some water to the reservoir, the dam did not collapse and no water leaked. With experience, Roger was no longer so anxious. He felt that everything was going well.

Until one day he saw Angelica near the construction site, and he ran over to say hello: "Hi, little chaffinch, why did you fly here?"

Angelica gave Roger a bright smile, then restrained herself, and said in a heavy tone that was not suitable for her age: "I came with Dean Benedictine. Someone is dying in the mountain camp.

I will be his final master when I grow up."

This topic was not suitable for in-depth discussion, so the two of them crossed themselves, said goodbye to each other, and went about their business.

It wasn't until it was completely dark that night that Roger heard the sound of the dean sending Angelica back.

The next day Roger and Angelica joked: "You have learned to come home at night, didn't your mother teach you?"

Angelica didn't look very good. She gave Roger a smile and said, "I was really busy yesterday. I just came back after having dinner at the mountain people's place."

"What delicious food did you eat?" Roger continued to tease her.

"There was nothing good to eat, so I drank water and ate black bread."

Seeing that she was indeed in low spirits, Roger stopped joking and advised her to take a rest, and then went on a horseback inspection.

It got colder and colder in the next few days, and the sun kept hiding behind the clouds all day long. The experienced old man told Roger that the winter rain was probably coming.

Roger was very surprised: "It's only October, winter is still early."

"It's not wrong, it's happened before."

Roger knew that if you didn't listen to the old man, you would suffer a lot. He cheered up and urged everyone to speed up.

The original plan can no longer be used, and now we must race against time against God.

Roger worked on the construction site until dark every day. He encouraged everyone he met. He told them: "This is the final battle!"

He scolded those who were holding back: "Do you want everyone's efforts to be in vain?"

He saw some weak people who seemed unable to support themselves, so he got off his horse and went to help himself.

Under his leadership, the mountain residents stopped complaining and insisted on gritting their teeth.

The priest and the dean issued a call, and the villagers from the riverside village also came spontaneously.

The baron personally led the team into battle and fucked him shirtless.

Roger saw Angelica in the crowd. She and a group of old and weak people were delivering water and food to people.

Roger stepped forward and stopped her. He looked at her pale face and advised her to go back and rest.

She just shook her head.

Roger was a little angry and said, "I want you to go back and rest."

"No," Angelica rejected Roger. Her throat was a little hoarse and she said, "Everyone is insisting, so can I."

Just as Roger was about to use coercion, a drop of water fell on his cheek, like tears.

Then came the second drop, the third drop, more and more, and it rained.

The winter rain did not fall heavily at the beginning. It fell slowly and patiently, no matter day or night, it just kept on.

The dam was almost completed, and everyone worked hard for two days in the light rain before finally declaring victory.

There was no celebration. Roger ordered all the weak ones to go back, leaving only the strong ones on guard duty in shifts.

Now all that remains is to accept the test.

Angelica's condition worsened, and Roger went back to see her several times. She always had a fever and had no appetite at all.

Her mother was at her bedside just praying.

Roger didn't know what to do. He wanted to comfort her, but he didn't know what to say.

However, Angelica would give him a smile every time she saw Roger coming, which in turn comforted the bewildered Roger.

The rain has been falling steadily, not heavily, but non-stop.

The water in the reservoir rose silently, and Roger just watched as it crossed the warning line he had set.

He ordered the water gate to be opened, and the water rushed through the short stone channel and left along the deep ditch, so the water level stopped rising. Everything was as he expected.

The rain continues, and this is a competition of endurance.

Roger knew that now was not the most dangerous time. When the mountain had absorbed enough water and could no longer provide a buffer, then the dam would have to face the flash flood caused by all the rainwater alone. That would be the final test.

Another person died in the mountain camp.

Angelica's condition became more and more serious, and her fever never went away, just like this damn winter rain.

Roger touched Angelica's forehead and felt it was even hotter.

Angelica stopped smiling. She didn't even know that Roger came to see her, and she didn't respond when he called her.

A rose-like rash broke out on her skin.

Roger knelt down and prayed with her mother, and he prayed very sincerely.

The soft rain continues, continues.

Roger's face was full of water.

He looked at the water level, and before he knew it, the water level was high again.

The water in the deep ditch no longer leaves quietly, they begin to roar.

The patrolman reported that he saw no water seepage. Roger guessed that there was some water, but it was just mixed in with the rain and could not be seen.

But as long as there is no obvious water seepage, it doesn't matter and the embankment will not break.

People are still dying in the mountain camp.

Angelica survived, but she still had a fever, sometimes severe, sometimes better.

Her face was haggard, but she still tried her best to give him a smile when she saw Roger.

Her throat was very hoarse, but she said she was much better and her stomach was not very bloated.

Roger asked her not to talk too much and have a good rest.

He told her some things about the dam, and he picked them up and didn't care whether she understood them or not.

But she listened very carefully and was very happy and very tired.

So Roger stopped talking, told her to have a good rest, and then left.

The damn winter rain has stopped temporarily. Although the sky is still cloudy and the sun has died somewhere, Roger is still very happy.

Amir came back, and the two of them inspected the dam together.

Roger kept talking about the process of building the dam, and Amir inspected it carefully.

Finally Amir said: "There is nothing better than this."

So Roger felt relieved and shouted towards the canyon: "Come on, flash flood, come on!"

People are still dying in the mountain camp, and a few are probably dying, but there are no new cases.

Roger felt that the most difficult time was over.

Flash floods are coming, accompanied by the raging winter rain.

The overwhelming rain made it impossible for Roger to see the power of the flood. He could only hear the rumble and roar like thousands of horses galloping towards his face.

He and Amir stood on the dam like sculptures. He shouted towards the canyon: "Come on, come on! I'm not afraid of you!"

His voice couldn't penetrate the rain curtain.
