Chapter 317 Gao Zi Debate (4)
Gaozi asked again: "Then why do you know who you are?"
The Confucian scholar thought this question was ridiculous, so Gaozi said, "Why are you? Why am I me?"
"The root of it is that I lie in the sum of all my relationships in the world. It includes some destined and irreversible; it also includes what can be changed by the self-choice of those people."
"Those that cannot be changed are my parents' son, my grandfather's grandson, my brother's younger brother, my brother's elder brother, and my wife's benefactor..."
"Those who can be changed are once a scholar with land at home, I used to be the master of the plough, I am Mozhe, I am a member of the Central Committee of Mozhe, and I am a laborer responsible for some affairs in Si Shang who eats the taxes and wages of Si Shang..."
"The sum of these relationships is me. You are the same, he is the same, everyone is the same, which makes everyone in the world, everyone, and everyone cannot exist in their current self without others. Without my parents, there would be no me; without Si people who pay taxes, there would be no me who debates with you now; without the servants who gave me farming back then, there would be no me who could read... All these relationships have made me who is the me now, and also made you who is the you now."
"That's why you are you, why I am me. And this is definitely good."
This is a bit confusing to the Confucian scholars, but the disciples of the Taoist school who have always pursued "full nature", "true self", and "return to nature" suddenly lit up their eyes, and they could easily understand the meaning of Gaozi.
Because they are different from Confucian scholars, they have been pursuing things like "what is me", "what is man", "the essence of man", "man and nature" all their lives.
Gaozi's words were instantly understood by them and instantly understood why they were themselves rather than others.
The Confucian scholar was puzzled and said, "This... has nothing to do with human nature. Just say that you are you and I am me. Besides, what you just said is that human needs are human nature. What does human needs have to do with the sum of all these relationships?"
Gaozi smiled and said, "I just talked about the body and human beings, so I can distinguish each person clearly. Everyone is everyone, and everyone has inseparable relationships with everyone else, so everyone is everyone, and everyone knows that they are themselves. This is the body. The Mohist theory of the combination of style, you should know? Points are bodies, lines are parts; I am bodies, people in the world are parts. People are themselves and bodies, and people are worlds."
"Now what I want to talk about is clone."
"People have needs and know that they have needs. In order to meet their needs, they actively transform themselves and nature, and use the laws of the way of heaven and earth to meet their needs. This is human nature."
"So human nature has no good or evil."
"My parents have sexual needs and reproductive needs, so they have the marriage to me, and that's why I am my parents' son."
"For more power and rule, those vassal kings allocated land to my ancestors. In order to avoid being tired, to have better food and clothing, my parents' generation hired ploughers to work, so that I was the master of those ploughers."
The core of Confucianism that never goes by is the relationship between various sins and benevolence and righteousness in the early days of the capital era. Only by talking about profit and irresistible way of heaven can one pass through it.
The original accumulation of capitalism with moral etiquette and law characteristics... may be possible, but I feel that my level is not enough to build a complete new Confucian system that conforms to the era of primitive capital accumulation, so I simply change the core.
Taoism talks about the incorruptible laws of heaven and earth, which can be said to be an irresistible natural law.
The Mohist school talks about weighing big profits, which can be said to be the small righteousness in front of the long-term.
Now more than 150 years have passed before the concept of "Great Harmony in the World" appeared in history. With appropriate corrections, the Mohist school finally shouted out this tempting distant ideal in advance.
The world is returned to the Lord, the nine provinces are united, everyone loves each other, and to benefit the world, everyone does their best, and everything is happy. This is for the great harmony.
This revised concept of Datong has a stronger taste in the Mohist school, especially the content of "Everyone does his best, everyone loves both, everyone is engaged in the work they like, everyone is for me and I am for everyone", which is also the summary of the reality and future propaganda of the Mohist school in Si over the years.
The saying "What you like" is a strengthening of the view of human nature just now. Now the Mohist school is still known as "fatherless beasts". Those great-grand concepts that have a strong idea of love are the Datong recognized by Confucian scholars two hundred years later, but are the "birds" opposed by Confucian scholars today.
When the Confucian scholar heard this, it seemed like a mouse fell into boiling water. He screamed in surprise: "Fart! Fart! Fart! Fart a big fart, it will be smelly, and it will be punished if it will cause trouble to the world!"
"If human nature is to satisfy human needs, then isn't the world going to be in chaos?"
"A farmer seeks profit, he must be contrary to etiquette. He wants to cultivate his own land and no longer work in public fields. The vassal king who has a fiefdom of hundreds of miles will find ways to cause chaos and thus have a fiefdom of thousands of miles; the vassal king who has a fiefdom of thousands of miles will find ways to cause chaos and thus have a fiefdom of a country."
"People's hearts seek profit are the root of the chaos in the world. Your Mohist family actually said that seeking profit is righteousness, seeking profit is human nature, and we must follow human nature. What are you doing if you want to make the chaos in the world?"
"If human nature is like this, and what do you encourage you to liberate human nature, then wouldn't it be that everyone fights, the world is in chaos, and blood flows away..."
Gaozi refuted: "Your words are ridiculous."
"Before Shennong, no one in the world could farm. Shennong comprehended the will of heaven to domesticate grains and teach people to plant them, so as to meet people's food needs."
"Before Youchao, there were no houses in the world and people were cold. Youchao understood the will of heaven, and in order to shelter from the rain and avoid the needs of wild beasts, hence the world had houses."
"Before Suiren, the world did not know how to use fire. People ate raw meat and drank blood. Suiren comprehended the will of heaven, in order to make people eat better meat, so that the world could have fire."
"As for now, because people need irrigation, the river is excavated, so there is a gunpowder blasting method, which saves manpower."
"Because the mine needs water pumping, the machinery factory has made coal-burning machinery to meet this demand, thus meeting the demand."
"People's satisfaction of needs and the continuous improvement and change of needs are the root of the world's progress, and this is the reason for human nature."
"Good and evil are what people divide good and evil, and then judge according to their behavior. In order to eat, I work hard, cultivate my own land, and harvest food, and in order to satisfy my humanity, am I wrong?"
"I went to steal other people's property in order to have a meal. Of course I was wrong. But can you say that human nature is wrong?"
The Confucian scholar cursed: "If demand is human nature, then the world will be in chaos. Therefore, demand cannot be human nature!"
Gaozi laughed and said, "It's like the sun rising from the east and setting in the west. This is the Tao following nature, and this is the unchangeable ambition. It's not that you say it exists, it does not exist, it does not exist."
"We should do what we should do to recognize the existence of human nature and use it to benefit the world."
"Didn't you hear about Dayu's flood control in ancient times?"
"Yu's father Gun did not know the way of heaven and the will of heaven, which blocked the water flow and led to chaos in the world. People may be fish and turtles, causing harm to the world. This is precisely because Gun could not know the will of heaven."
"And Yu Sheng knew the way of heaven and knew that the water flowed, thus benefiting the world."
"Then, human nature itself has no good or evil, and it is not good or evil, and it is not good or evil from the water itself. What is the difference? If you don't escape and understand human nature, then it is Dayu. You can use this unchangeable way between heaven and earth to benefit the world; if you escape or even don't know human nature at all, or even think that human nature is good, then it is Gun, which will cause great harm to the world!"
"The sun is hot in summer and cold in winter, with no good or evil. But some people wear cotton jackets in summer, but are naked in winter, and then curse the sun for being vicious. Isn't this ridiculous?"
